News article

quote:

Over nearly nine months, a surge of killings in the Capital City has propelled the city on a course that could make 2020 the deadliest year in history, according to an analysis of data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and individual reports from the Jackson Police Department.

At the same time, the number of active duty officers patrolling a beat keeps dropping despite recruit classes that bring more patrolmen into the fold.

As of Thursday, Jackson had 75 homicides thus far in 2020, a 23 percent increase over the same period last year.

Part of the challenge, Banks said, is providing competitive pay. Right now, the starting salary for a JPD officer is $26,000.

$26,000 for that job... man frick that

but I'm sure the Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba with tackle this problem head on since he did promise to make Jackson
"the most radical city on the planet."

I wouldn’t work any job in Jackson for 26k a year. Let alone one where I might get shot at.

You make almost double that stacking boxes in an Amazon warehouse. What a shame.

Working 40 hours a week / 52 weeks a year

A salary of $26,000 equates to a monthly pay of $2,167, weekly pay of $500, and an hourly wage of $12.50.

26k is damn near poverty wages in 2020, especially if you have a family. That's ridiculous that a cop could probably qualify for food stamps and Medicaid, although I'd imagine they have ok benefits.

It must be all the racist white people chasing down and killing blacks in the streets

Right?

But those morons outside the house of Jeff Bezos with the guillotine want $30/hr for sorting and delivering Amazon packages

It’s crazy over there. I worked in the area for about 3 yrs.

If someone commits a crime in a surrounding city they will not follow the perp into the Jackson city limits.

My employees voted for the cukomba guy because they thought he had their best interests in mind.

Crazy crazy area and you stay out of most of Jackson during the day and definitely not at night

At some point the total number of people in areas like this has to decrease to where only sensible folks are left right?

To be fair, I stay out of about 60% of Baton Rouge most of the time, even during the day.

Baton Rouge Police Department start at 32k.

For those of us in the business, we call what you are seeing in Jackson a clue.

You get what you pay for.

and THAT is a huge reason you have some circumstances show up when there is a bad apple (most cops are legit).

see, don't defund the police, rather increase their pay along with the standards for employment. Then, you will see substantial improvements across the board.
