We are unfortunately in 9u baseball so the kids have so many things to try and process. Some games are good, some are bad. But once they can stop having tunnel vision and process multiple things going on, it will be nice.

I wish they had some 2D tournaments in this area because they have closed bases tournaments which would be beneficial at 9u so the kids can learn the aspect of pitching before being asked to hold runner, not balk, etc.

pretty much the way it was when I was in hs, most all of the good athletes played the big three, some even did track as well, there were some that "specialized"

It killed my high school's football program. Because the baseball coach forced many kids to pick a sport and most pick baseball because they felt it was their best shot at playing a sport past high school.

My high school has been arse ever since the baseball coach made this rule. Multiple 1-9, 2-8 seasons because it just so happened that a lot of the best football players were also the best baseball players.

At TCU we would play pick up baseball games in the summertime and it was ridiculous how many of my football teammates who never played baseball were able to just pick it up and automatically be good at it like it was nothing. Makes me wonder how many of them could have become something at baseball if it were more accessible as a youth to them. Athletic ability trascends sports

yep, 100% agree, I played baseball at LSU and played a lot of intramural sports with guys from the football team, there were some tremendous natural athletes among them, of course this was of an age where, as mentioned previously, that most good athletes played almost every sport they could while growing up

Wife and son fly to Orlando for one last high school level camp. Crazy that whole chapter of our life is coming to an end. Definitely did the travel ball thing…it was fun.

Pick up basketball was even crazier. Our coaches wouldnt let us play pickup basketball because of the injury risk which is why we either had to do it in secret or just play pickup baseball. But playing basketball with my football teammates was insane just how athletic they were.

i would have to see this to believe it. bunch of really good athletes look terrible playing baseball.

Its not like we would go out there and face pitches at 95mph but I think it was more of how many of my teammates had a smooth, natural looking swing, could throw well, and cover a lot of ground in the outfield

Although I had a teammate who got drafted by the Orioles throw live pitches to us and he made us all look silly. Throwing 95 like it was nothing. I wasn't a bad hitter but I struggled to make contact. He could also hit. Watched him hit 13 straight over the fence taking batting practice L screen throws.

He ended up playing WR for the Jets and 49ers in the NFL.

same experience, there were some incredibly good basketball players on the football team, at LSU there was a track and field event open to anyone and everyone each spring, four DBs from the football team entered as a 4x400 relay team and set an unofficial national record, close to a world record, and we had had a couple of beers right before the meet

Early specialization is killing sports at all levels. You’ll get people like 777 saying baseball has never been played at a higher level, which is bullshite. The game is strikeouts and homers partly because of analytics yes, but also because we’ve lost all interdisciplinary athletics. Same thing is happening in all other sports. We can only play the game in one style because they’re learning that and only that at too early of an age. There’s things in baseball you can glean from all other sports, some tangible and some intangible

Chalmatian dad threatened to go get his piece out of his truck after our high school age coach argued for a balk. It's the best life.

We played last weekend and let me tell you these girls showed up and showed out! Despite getting screwed by the umps in pool play TWICE and gettin last place in pool play. First time my Paisleigh Kate has EVER been in last placed in pool play since she was in 4U! She was so embarrassed!! But let me tell you it lit a fire in her tail and as well as the other girls too. Coach Chad had them be at the park at 4:45am for batting practice and we was ALL ok with it!! And the proof was in the results. We come out there a whipped that #1 seed (want say there name cause they all cheat) but I'm sure yall can figure it out LMBO!! But we sent them packing and won the next 2 and made it all the way to the championship game at midnight. Unfortunately we got the SAME umps as we had in pool play and it didn't work out way but man I'm so proud of these girls and the way they fought!! When the cops was pullin Coach Chad off the field he told them how proud he was of them and two not let those umps ruin there love for the game and let me tell you it didn't. My PK is more determined then EVER! Can't wait for Dallas's next weekend!

I work directly in the analytics/data science field yet I hate how analytics is taking over sports especially baseball. It made sense in Moneyball because the A's were the only team doing it at the time but when all 30 teams are all employing their own Peter Brands to crunch numbers and gain an analytic edge then nobody has an analytic edge and the difference maker is going to be intangibles which can't be measured via hard data.

The best players are always going to be the best players. And your kids aren’t going to catch them, no matter how many lessons you pay for

This actually might surprise you, a lot of kids wash out that would’ve been tremendous players. The kids that do really well, live the game and spend every waking moment they can practicing. They can pass kids with more talent. It’s actually starting to happen more now it seems bc kids are burnt from playing 120 games a year.

I agree. It is nice when you play other teams who are also trying to teach their kids baseball and not to just run around the bases like crazy.

If everyone is doing the same thing, you create no statistical advantage over the opponent. This seems exceedingly easy to understand

Those kids aren’t tremendous. They’re likely in the like65% percentile of players and would end up like 99.9% of other kids that play the sport and never make it past the high school level.

I never said that at all

Top of the game is higher than ever, but overall I would say it’s down. Hs level is better than ever but lower level jv it’s not

I was talking numbers wise though

As far as specialization, it’s not early specialization to play 1 sport in hs, even middle school. But I do think kids should play 2 sports, one fall and 1 spring in hs. We agree there for sure

I do think every kid needs an off season and you shouldn’t force kids to play if they don’t want to though

But I have never advocated for early specialization. Kids should try all kinds of sports to see what they like
