Will we also have to change the way we talk to avoid being racist? I’m trying to drop the long vowels but it just isn’t working. I think I’ll just keep offending.

I learned that lesson when I was 14 the first time I went north of the Mason-Dixon line. I know how to tailer my speech to my audience to avoid being judged. They really do assume that a southern accent indicates one is a racist moron.

Yeah, there’s a lot of bigotry regarding accents, but the ones that really get me are the ones that Hollywood actors try to pull off to Insinuate ignorance when playing the part of a southerner and it just makes them look foolish in the process, This is especially hilarious when they forever butcher New Orleans and also Cajun accents. My favorite is the New Orleans women who sound like southern bells from South Carolina or Georgia. Good lord man.. just do a slower talking Brooklyn accent and you’d get much closer than that.

There is a dude I work with who is about as country as country gets. He still calls blacks "colored people" because he honestly thinks that's more respectful. Super nice guy but not very smart - I actually tried to tell him like dude it's 2020 you can just say black people or African American and that saying "colored people" is actually worse.
But shite not many people can understand him anyway so he's probably safe.

I relish the fact that my accent is viewed as an indicator of poverty and low intelligence - any kind of perceived weakness that doesn't exist works to your advantage.
I remember convincing a girl from Vermont that I grew up off of one of only two paved roads in Alabama, where we finally got electricity when I was in 8th grade.
