And sadly it's nowhere near as corrupt as FIFA. Honestly I think that the officials of FIFA should be charged with crimes against humanity, particularly the ones who voted in favor of Qatar hosting the World Cup, and then be executed for it immediately after they are found guilty. There will be 4,000 deaths due to that decision, which is higher than 9/11. The executives at FIFA absolutely should be executed for that.

Having lived in Beijing, I would be shocked if they also didn't financially benefit off of it. It made a great deal of sense to let them host the Winter Olympics since there's no way in hell it would end up like Sochi. The problem is it doesn't snow much in Beijing since it's on the edge of grasslands and desert, so they'll in all likelihood have to create that from scratch, and unless they go far more north than Beijing, I can't possibly see where within a hundred miles of Beijing that they could do cross country skiing.
EDIT: Just checked and they made a billion dollars off of it. Only the Vancouver Winter Olympics were more profitable.

Beijing was a fricking shithole before they were rewarded the Olympics. It greatly streamlined their infrastructure, economy, and population to embrace the Western world. They moved all the factories out of the city solely due to the Olympics. There's no doubt in my mind or anyone who has ever lived there that China greatly profited from the Olympics. It's not like Athens that went to shite. A billion I think is on the low immediate end on how they benefited from them.

if LA is using a lot of already existing facilities or a more expansive area... that would be a big concession by the IOC

facilities. alot of the kickbacks to the IOC were conceeded. im not sure what else. there was an article somewhere when the initial award decision was released that described it.

This post makes me wonder, in those 11 years, which event could you work on mastering full time to compete in by 2028?

NPR had a great story on this last month. The 1984 L.A. Olympics had a nearly $250 million dollar surplus.
L.A. is the most venue ready city in the world(only 2 other cities come close). UCLA dorms/campus will serve as the Olympic village. The only major venue that will need to be built is the Aqautic/swimming venue. And private sponsors will probably help build it like in 84(McDonald's).

No, see above. But the olympics survived. I remember IOC officials complaining that Atlanta was too commercialized all they while the corrupt officials were on the take from competing cities.
There are only a few cities that are able to host without it being a huge burden on the cities. LA is definitely one of them.
