A 73-year-old woman in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has given birth to twin girls.

Doctors delivered the twins, who were born following IVF treatment, on Thursday.

"The mother and the babies are doing well," Dr Uma Sankar, the woman's doctor, told BBC Telugu.

Mangayamma Yaramati said she and her husband, who is 82 years old, have always wanted children but had been unable to conceive until now.

"We are incredibly happy," her husband Sitarama Rajarao told BBC Telugu on Thursday, hours after the babies were born.

Having children was important to the couple, who also said that they felt stigmatised in their village.

"They would call me a childless lady," Ms Yaramati said.

"We tried many times and saw numerous doctors," she added, "so this is the happiest time of my life."

I'm not sure what to say about this one. Think I coulda made it another couple of decades enduring the "childless lady" taunts and not subjected myself to childbirth.

She will die during childbirth. How the hell is an 82 year old body gonna handle that?

Damn. Those twins will lose both parents before they are 10 years old.

Would never happen in the US. No reputable fertility clinic would ever agree to it.

I think the cutoff age is usually 50 here (with donor eggs being used)

Article said the father suffered a stroke soon after the twins were born. Basically said the couple has no plans for what happens to the kids if they die. Some bs about “leaving that to the hands of God”.

She'll die before they hit puberty.

Admittedly I only skimmed through the post and didn’t really read it thoroughly.

I guess good for them, but how will a 73 year old and an 82 year old raise kids? They’ll be dead before the kids get to middle school. Are they just going to be thrown into the system?
