Living only for yourself is terrible and leads to sadness. Our culture is made up of people who know that now and people who will know that after it's too late.

So, like vegans, crossfitters, and atheists, they are evangelical assholes.

My wife and I started out marriage thinking "no kids ever". But we changed our minds when our niece came along. Now I couldn't imagine not having kids.

The times when you see them succeed is better than any success I've had (son getting his first wrestling match win, daughter being chair of her section...doesn't have to be big). Their excitement is worth any tough time.

The times when they scare you and you get to guide them through it (daughter's first car accident). Helping them through the pain to see it will get better, who else could do that for them.

All of it is scary and exciting...keeps me young.

Congratulations to them... and I'm not surprised their fellow DINKS turned on them.

I feel sorry for DINKS... it's all fun and games until you're 82, your spouse is dead, you have no family and your life consisted simply of earning and spending.. and nary a soul will notice when you're gone.

I'm well north of 50. I know several contemporaries who went childless. Without exception, they have confided to me that they regret it.

My two are not perfect, and have given us plenty of stress and expenses over the years. I wouldn't trade them for a beach house, 25 grand annual vacays (oldest is 25) and a slew of exotic cars, which is about what I could have afforded if I didn't have them.

Absolutely nothing. This is straight up media ragebait slop. We would all be better off if everyone simply ignored any "news article" that's heavily reliant on social media discourse or comment threads.

Look up the "dead internet theory". I beginning to think it's not a theory at all.

My aunt admitted to me in her early 60s that she regretted it and resented her husband over it. Seems they went back and forth in their early marriage over having kids- one would want it, the other wouldn't.. then they'd flip. She got tired of it and upped and got a hysterectomy so they never had to discuss it again.

It made me profoundly sad for her. She had reached the age approaching retirement and all her decisions had been cast in stone.. there's no do-overs for that by then.

I don't think we're at dead internet yet, but that's not what stupid articles like this rely on. Think about a hypothetical concert. A big, stadium sized one. 50k people attend. Then imagine you sat down with every single one of them after the concert and interviewed them, asking questions about the concert itself, the artist, the music, life the universe and everything. Then you aggregated all of those answers and fixated specifically on any point of disagreement, any weird/offensive/aggressive statement, etc. You could create dozens of technically correct but utterly pointless headlines from that.

And that's what every message board/subreddit/comment thread is, except you didn't have to take the effort of interviewing anyone, as everyone fed their thoughts and opinions straight into your computer for you, or your AI slop engine, to review.

Pretty close to Dead Internet. Three areas that define dead internet. Dominance of Bots (over 50% of current web content is from bots), Manipulation of algorithms and AI slop.

Agree that these articles are hyper-fixated on the most extreme ends of an argument, but that's meant for manipulating algorithms for engagement and then responses that are mostly bots driving views up.

I'd say we're probably more than halfway to dead internet being real.

Same. With that being said I’m not close with any of my friends who didn’t have kids at this point and can’t really relate to my childless coworkers. Not that I don’t like them, there is just very little that’s relatable at this point.

This is becoming a thing in my friend group. I don't think anybody means any harm, but a lot of the social gatherings include kids because it's hard to get together otherwise. The childless crew seems to show up less and less for that stuff.

Sincere question: are your kids the only thing you talk about? Do you not have any thoughts/interests/hobbies/etc that aren't related to your children?

Bro I work 8-9 hours a day and then tag team with my wife for the next 2-3 hours every evening to get the 3 of them where they need to go. We then have homework till 9-10 every night. The weekends are a mix of games, tournaments, housework, performances, and projects. Then patching together any home projects we have.

I have plenty of things I’m interested in but zero time. I don’t really have the bandwidth for OTHER people’s interests either. Just a busy season of life but 100% what we signed up for.

No offense, but this doesn't sound stable at all. She made the decision and resented her husband for it? If your uncle couldn't decide whether or not to propose to her, would she have cut off her left-hand ring finger to end the discussion?

Hope you didn't take too much advice from her...

I 100% get that. You said you couldn't "relate" to your childless co-workers, which is what threw me

Only people getting angry about it are the ones that get pissed when fat famous people (especially those that used their fat to get famous) start losing weight

Nope. Not stable. When she gets fed up she gets drastic.

They went back and forth many, many times.. I think she was tired of getting hurt over the issue.

I take her recipes, not much else.
