I would never cycle on roads around rig activity. sounds like a death wish

Actually, things smoothed out a lot when the big trucks came around. Before then, a fair percentage of the cyclists would "la dee da" down the center of the lane, giving you a big "f you." Trucks came around, they started actually sharing the road.

Since I always slow down get over for them, I kind of resent them sending out the goons to force you over.

I tried this during the summer of 2009. Did it for a couple of months before someone informed me the bike was broke and wasn't working correctly. I was working twice as hard because the rear wheel wasn't turning correctly.

I was wondering why I was the slowest biker in town.

depends on what you want

a brand new, decent intro bike is probably going to run you at least $500

you can keep an eye out for some on sale

What kind of life expectancy do entry level bikes usually get? I bought the lowest level Raleigh Misceo and have over 700 miles on it over the last few years and it definitely is starting to feel it's age. I'm trying to decide if I should spend the $$ to get it back in newish shape or just spend some $$ on a little better upgrade.

I wish bikers would stay out of the road and use the bike areas the city builds for them, like the velodrome

we have off-road, paved bike paths connecting the entire city

Same here, not to mention the mountain biking trails. Over 250 miles just in the city limits.

700 miles is nothing. Keep the drive train clean (I decrease and really lube a few times a month, doesn't need to be as regular for someone riding less). Keeping it clean does wonders for shifting. Taking it to the bike shop for a tune up will help as well. They need fine adjusting and can get out of whack. Depends on what shop you go to as to what it costs. Many will do for free if you bought there. Bearings and such can be replaced too, but at wayyyyy more miles than 700.

Good to know, without knowing much about bikes I know both wheels are a hair out of true, my rear brake cable is stuck/seized and not working, and the chain rubs the derailleur(?) a bit on a downward stroke from my right leg, assuming that bearing has some play. With the exception of truing the wheel I'm mechanically inclined to take care of the other stuff, just haven't had the time. Maintenance = rinsing it with a hose occasionally.

YouTube is a lifesaver. I attempt almost anything myself. Then I'll bring it in if I screw it up. Brake cables have to be greased sometimes. Derailleurs need adjustment. GCN has do it yourself videos on YouTube that I find helpful. Adjusting your shifters usually takes a Phillips screwdriver if you didn't bend anything.
