And paying teachers helps that how? Teaching standards are set, and teachers get the same amount of time with the kids no matter how much they get paid.
My belief is you get what you pay for....
And I also agree with whomever said that education administration is a serious problem as well.

Single parent homes = no parental involvement = kids who frick up schools
Catholic school facilities in South Louisiana look like something of the 1970s in a lot of cases yet send almost entire classes to college.

The problem in your logic is assuming that the local government is somehow entitled to exxon’s money.
By your logic, the government, then, should not charges taxes to anyone.
They are no more, or less, entitled to Exxon's money, than they are my money.

But that's the point. We are paying more than a lot of other places, and getting less than a lot of other places.
If we get half the value as everyone else, then maybe if we spend twice as much, we might get the same value as everyone else.
Or, we can actually fix the return of value problem.

If I told you you could have 45k in salary a year with a 7% tax exemption and a guaranteed million dollar retirement account would you take it?
Or you could have a 60k salary, but you had to pay 7% more in taxes a year and completely fudn your own retirement which one would you take?

What world do we live in where a group of educators currently running a bankrupt system are in charge of future economical development in BR. Stay classy BR

Which comes from the lack of education, unfortunately. We’re a full generation out full of stupid people and people that didn’t/don’t care about education. How we could get the turned around is beyond me. But if it isn’t changed, things are only going to get worse.

An elected democratic one. You knew this was the case before electing them to the school board

Every time we give exemptions to some companies and not to other companies, we play favorites. Do you think our government should be playing favorites?

These tax breaks won’t change current operations but Exxon will send a message publicly to the state that future expansions will now be heading elsewhere. It’s a move they can afford to make. So no you won’t notice anything different for a while but in 10-15 years it’ll be apparent.
The expansion in Corpus was considered for Baton Rouge several years ago. That consideration won’t even happen next time. The problems with schools in the state aren’t all about money.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe Ascension parish has approved or will approve all of their ITEP applications.
They also don't have the student body EBR does plus their teachers are a whole lot more competent.
This is more an EBR problem than a state problem.
Exxon donates millions of dollars to various organizations in the area. It'll be interesting to see what transpires after they're denied multiple exemptions.

Yeah but that's harder than throwing shite at the wall and hoping it sticks so let's just "temporarily" raise taxes to fix it

They probably won't ever close the entire operation, but as we move more and more towards automation they absolutely could close large parts down to consolidate with other plants in more favorable locations.

Maybe. Also comes from a government that funds life from cradle to grave

To be fair, that's kind of a false comparison.
Most teachers in LA get between 35K and 45K a year in pension. If that person instead was getting social security, they would probably be looking at 25K a year.
So you are looking at teacher retirement being 10K - 20K more a year.
Many employees don't "completely fund their own retirement". I would say considering the average employee contributes just enough to get the 401K match. (just being real here). So half of their additional retirement is being funded by the company.
As you know, LA fully exempts from income tax, teacher pension, and social security payments, and 6K a year of other retirement.
And when they get to 65, everyone is on medicare anyways.
Teachers get a slightly better retirement package on an after-tax basis. But it's not a huge difference.
Edited to add, if a teacher retires from public school teaching and does something else that DOES pay into social security, they get royally raped by the offset.

A world where we have so failed in this state, that the only way we can attract development is by giving stuff away.

Honestly, there is no fixing it.
Louisiana is fricked.
The only thing you can do at this point is look out for your own.
