Now that seems entirely plausible.
It's hard to drop them in upside down, but if you do then I could see something happening similar to this situation...upside down mortars could do some damage to a person.

there's no way he could have just been holding it on his head dropped it in there an lit a fuse. i shot 30 of these off this weekend and the sparkle from the fuse would have burned the frick out of my face if it was on top of my head. it did my hands a few times. had to have been a problem in the exchange.

I thought everyone did this? My parents made me stop when some dry leaves caught fire in the sewer. Another thing that looks cool is putting an upside down trash can over the mortar. The trash can launches like 10 ft in the air and the fireworks kind of spray everywhere.

this is the kind of shite im talking about. it's amazing how fireworks can take people who are normally rationale (no clue if this a&m fan belongs in that group or not) and make them become complete wreckless around things that can be very dangerous.

i don't think i was aiming for cool with that post. just i don't think he held the tube on his head, dropped in a mortar, lit it and held it there. i was just saying i lit mortars safely the other night and still managed to burn my hands a bit.

I am thinking one of three things happened
1)User error- he puts in the mortar backwards with the lift charge facing up. Pressure knocks them down from initial lift, then blows up on his face.
2)Device malfunction- fuse accidentally lights shell rather than lift charge.
3)Case malfunction, launch tube fails, not lifting lit mortar shell explodes either on his head or on the ground next to him.

Just fricking wierd. No matter what, there is a launch phase that happens and lasts a few seconds to get the martar into the sky. So this would have given him time to drop/release/run/throw everything.
I keep reading "on" his head, but I sure am getting an unsettling feeling that the martar shot into his mouth or eye socket and blew up. Very few other situations would cause an explosion strong enough to make him where basically "nothing was left", like his brother said.

In any case, he's still holding a high energy explosive to his head...
