I read an article where one of his friends was quoted as saying something like "there was no use calling 911. There was nothing of my friend left.".

I figured the downward pressure of it shooting up hit him in the head and killed him, but I wouldn't think that would've resulted in the above quote you mentioned.

I'm thinking that maybe he put the mortar in the tube upside down... instead of of shooting up into the air and exploding it remained in the tube and exploded right on top of his skull.
