BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Police say a Good Samaritan was hit by a passing vehicle on the Interstate after he got out of his car to try and help people who were involved in a different crash.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the crash happened at roughly 3:30 a.m. on North 1-110 near The Convention St. exit.

The crash involved a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer, 2010 Ford Fusion, 1992 Honda Accord, 2016 Chevrolet Impala, and an 18-wheeler.

The first crash involved only the Mitsubishi and the Ford.

Officials say the Mitsubishi was traveling the wrong way, south bound, on North bound I-110 in the outside lane causing a head-on collision.

A Good Samaritan who witnessed the crash parked his Impala and ran to the Ford to try and help.

Another Good Samaritan, Joseph Burnette, 44, also saw the crash and parked his Honda to assist.

As Burnette was walking back to his vehicle, an 18-wheeler hit the parked cars. Burnette was crushed between two vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene.

hate to see this and hate it even more for the truck driver, people don't realize it takes over football fielld to stop one of this rigs going 60-70 assuming the driver has an immediate reaction time.

Yep..figured the driver of the Mitsubishi was fricked up when I read the part about them traveling the wrong way down the interstate. Clicked on the link and read the whole article and sure enough, they're pretty certain the driver was impaired.

I hope that driver rots in hell if they die from their injuries. And if they don't, they should allow the family of the good samaritan to do whatever they want to with them. Ultimately it is the impaired driver's fault the good samaritan died to begin with.

This happens all the time. Stop on side of the interstate, and morons will lock on and run right into your vehicle.

Especially at night, they see the tail lights and get "target lock" that runs them right over the cars on the shoulder.

The driver going the opposite way had to have gotten on at convention right? It's a ways down before any exits even lead to going the opposite way

You always pass the wreck up by at least fifty yards and run back to the wreck if you are going to try to help. That way you don't add to the carnage.

Does it really? Jesus trains stop quicker than that. Not really, but still. Three football fields is a long way. 900 ft. That's unbelievable.

You really need to think carefully before getting out of a vehicle anywhere on that stretch of interstate. No runoff and people haul arse.

I like to help somebody else out, but you have to take care of yourself too.

As a spinoff to the thread the other day, this is why you only use hazards on the side of the road, and you use them everytime you are on the side if you can.
