Sure it can. It can also be seen as God being selfish. He would rather you die than say without meaning that you don't believe in him.

No one is saved by "being a good person"

If you've ever heard this at a church, RUN!

you are saved by faith and faith alone.

Our righteousness is but filthy rags to him.

The only way to salvation is faith in Christ and what he did at Calvary.

I fear Jehovah much more than a rusty machete.

If you understand the story of the Passover(plague in Egypt killing the first born) its no different than what Jesus did.

For Passover the Angel of Death came along and killed the first born of each family. The way to prevent this was to take the blood of an innocent lamb and paint it on your door, and the Angel of Death would spare your family and your firstborn would get to live.

Jesus's death was pretty much a Passover for all of humanity. We are all born with a death sentence as the wages of sin is death, and the only way to prevent it is to take the blood of an innocent(Jesus) to cover your sins and death will pass over you.

Passover was just foreshadowing Jesus

Well, salvation is the same way. One believes in his heart and confession is made unto salvation.

I personally believe, no man is above failure. But at the same time, what is in the heart will not be denied.

If someone asked you if you loved your husband, you would say yes. If someone threatened violence against you to forsake your husband, would your still agree? Probably not willingly.

Even moreso with Christ and if you have that personal relationship, death will not bother you because there really is no fear. There's a peace the HS gives. Go read Foxe's Book of Martyrs for an interesting read.

That's where you get into your physical body dying or your soul dying. People were promised eternal life for following his word, therefore people who believe in god believe you have nothing to fear in death

Right. Because as Christians we are called to not only believe, but also to be a thankful witness and representative of his glory, grace, and honor for saving us from his judgement. This is why we are baptized after salvation, and why we as his children are given the spiritual courage and fortitude to not deny him even unto death.

But that doesn't mean I have a desire to be put in that situation... I certainly don't seek persecution and martyrdom.
God willing, American Christians won't be forced into a situation like that anytime soon.

There's not any wiggle room when it comes to this. There's really not many different ways to "interpret" it's meaning either. It's about as cut and dry, black and white as any statement ever made in human history. Either you believe (1)those are the words of Jesus and (2) he was telling the truth or you don't. If you profess to be Christian those words are the bedrock foundation of your faith.

I'm going to bow out of this discussion and get back to work. It's turning into a Sunday mass lecture and I don't understand any of the sayings.

I was raised Catholic, as well. People dropping truth bombs in vague religious quotes don't do anything for me.

It swings back and forth really. It turned into a religious debate because of Foley's anti-American statement he was made to read before he died. That swung to people saying they would never say anti American stuff even if their life depended on it, which swung to people saying they wouldn't deny their faith if their life depended on it...

which lead to religious discussion

Well I wiggle out because I chose not to believe a book written by men is the end all be all. And I dont think the kid born in Africa who never heard of God before but lived a good life is eternally damned but little shite stain Johnny born in Beverly Hills is ok because he was raised and told to beleive. Doesnt make a lick of sense to me.

If you read the Bible, you will know these are not vague religious quotes. These are pretty common and well known parts of the Bible.

I love a bible truth bomb. I usually bomb then back asking if there wife sacrificed three doves and stayed in the house the last time she menstruated. That usually gets a puzzled look

I guess for me is it comes down to there would be no better time to proclaim your faith than being faced with death over it.

This has been a hot topic of debate, if a person never heard of Jesus, do they get a pass? No one knows, because we aren't God

A lot of people also say that is why Jesus has not returned yet, because the Gospel has not been spread to every corner and person of the Earth yet
