Dropping one on Munich would be a GD shame.

Well, Germany should've thought of that. Don't start no shite, won't be no shite.

I don’t think anybody that is intellectually honest will try to compare Soviet losses with anybody in that war except maybe the Chinese. But to argue that we did not play a quintessential role in the defeat of the Axis powers...ALL THREE of the Axis powers is to be just as intellectually dishonest.

We kept militaries and entire nations fighting. We held them up to continue to fight.

France was HUGE in American independence from Britain. Aside from it's military assistance on land, it's navy played a pivotal role in the American victory at Yorktown.

I doubt anyone has said the U.S. didn't play an essential role in winning WWII (I know I haven't said that), but it's intellectually dishonest to say the U.S. won the war without a whole LOT of help from it's allies.

The simple diplomatic recognition of the U.S. was also huge in terms of legitimizing the new nation.

EDIT: It also was instrumental in furthering Franklin's poonhoundery.

No question about it. Also got a lot of help from a cat 5 hurricane in 1780 that did some damage to the British Navy.

Not to take ANYTHiNG from the Greatest Generation, but Desert Storm says hi...

US forces decimated a modern, veteran, experienced army on their own turf after giving them two months to fortify their positions. Full-scale coordinated invasion, cut through them and the hostile desert like butter with VERY few casualties, straight through the middle of their capital and was smoking Cubans in the leaders own mansion within DAYS. To the point where it was almost a joke, it was so easy for them.

That was freaking INCREDIBLE!!!! No one in the world had ever seen anything like that!!! It made the Blitzkreig look like WWI trench warfare.

(well)

If I have the facts correct Israel without as much as raising a fist... walked out of bondage and headed on down to the Red Sea... were it parted and they ran across dry land to freedom.... as the greatest army on this planet was completely annihilated.

All because this nation/people had decided to completely believe in a promise.

Yes but what myself and others have asserted is that there wasn’t a country in the world (and still isn’t) that could do what the US did in going to war on two different sides of the globe, while propping up its allies, all while building a stronger economy and its people not starving in the streets.

I agree with Clemenza in The Godfather, when he tells Michael that they never should have let Hitler get away with the Munich agreement, "they were just asking for trouble."

U.S. industrial might was definitely essential to the Allied victory in WWII. For example, without American help, England would likely have been starved into submission. There was a period during the Battle of the Atlantic when the German U-boats were sinking supply ships bound for Britain faster than they could be built. Starvation was a very real threat in England for a period of time. And without England as a staging area, it would have been MUCH tougher to get a toehold in Western Europe.

but it’d be a tougher battle and may have to go through Italy rather than Normandy.

The nazi forces that held the beaches of France were among the lowest of their ranks, literally. Morale was terrible, they hadn’t been fed adequately, and many were already sick. Had hitler not been fighting the Soviet’s, storming the beaches would not have been possible. You’re right, an Italy route would have had to happen.

But I would agree that what took place here and abroad during WW2 saved the world.

You must be completely ignorant of WW2, you’ve been watching too many war movies. Russia destroyed everyone in their path, if it weren’t for them we’d be speaking German. We played a very small part in the actual fighting in Europe. I would rephrase it to, Russia “saved” the world, if you believe it that way.

Hurricane of 1780

It's a Wiki article, but it's well cited:

quote:

Among the ships lost from Rodney's fleet were the frigates HMS Phoenix, which was wrecked on the Cuban coast, and HMS Blanche, which disappeared without a trace. The sixth rate frigates HMS Andromeda and HMS Laurel were wrecked on Martinique with heavy loss of life. By far the worst losses in the British fleet, however, were under the command of Vice Admiral Peter Parker and Rear-Admiral Joshua Rowley. At the time of the hurricane, Rowley was off the coast of New York with a portion of the fleet, including HMS Sandwich. Parker was in Port Royal, Jamaica. Many of their ships, however, were in the hurricane's path. Among the losses were HMS Thunderer, HMS Stirling Castle, HMS Scarborough, HMS Barbados, HMS Deal Castle, HMS Victor, and HMS Endeavour. Almost all of their crews died. Seven other ships were dismasted.[11][12]:58
