And we played our part without absolutely decimating the welfare of our citizenry.

defeating the soviet union was literally hitlers main goal in life. its one of the two major central points of mein kempf. he was always going to invade the soviet union

The most impressive thing the US has ever done was to transform The Enlightenment from a philosophy to a blueprint for Western Culture via the tenets of the Declaration of Independence.
Declaration of Independence is without a doubt my favorite document of all time.

The war would have lasted exactly 4 months longer. Little Boy and Fat Man would have come a knockin’.

You’re probably right.

I think the attitude on the home front and everyone chipping in is unprecedented. We were 100% united to Annihilating Japan and Germany.

I’m talking more however about the fact that we were able to support our own military on two completely different sides of the world. There isn’t a country that I can think of that could do that.
There aren't many countries that have borders on both the Pacific and the Atlantic ocean separating them from all enemies by thousands of miles while still allowing free movement of materiel around the planet.
Our geography goes a long way toward enabling the things we did and still do. Raw materials and industrial might don't mean a whole lot to allies on the other side of the planet if you can't get over there easily.
EDIT: RELATIVELY free movement would probably be a better term. Enemies can still try to sink tonnage, but our huge coastline and multiple ports means that we are able to spread out shipments so much and at such a high rate that we really can't be effectively blockaded.

The US Army had just under 190K soldiers in 1939 and was woefully underequipped. Total in uniform between Army, Navy and Marines was 335K.
In 1945 the total was 12.2 million.
Pretty impressive. As was the massive output of material by industry that equipped not only our own military but large parts of the British, Soviet and French as well.

I agree, we are in the literal perfect location. Two big arse moats on each side of us.
But the fact that we were able to have so much industrial output that we were able to send supplies to across both oceans and split our forces and still win is pretty damn incredible.

Our ports are also passable year round (barring Alaska). We don't have to worry about winter closing them off for several months each year, but we also don't have to worry about tropical conditions making overland passage to the ports (and life in general) very difficult and can move stuff from the interior to the ports very easily. We're neither too far North nor too far South.

I’d say the Moon Landing is a bit more impressive than that.
Relative to the powers at the time, they definitely did this.
And if you want to count a tribe, Genghis Khan rising from nothing and conquering most of the known world I’d say is the most impressive.

The Roman Empire maybe could’ve done that but I’m not so sure.

If Hitler doesn’t invade and get stuck into winter, WW2 is completely different
If Hitler had invaded a month earlier, I think he takes the Soviet Union. I think we could still win since the Nazis were so evil they were counterproductive when it came to supporting their war efforts, but it’d be a tougher battle and may have to go through Italy rather than Normandy.

Honestly, what the Germans were able to achieve, even in defeat, was probably more impressive. The United States had every advantage imaginable going for us.
The fact is that all the major powers were capable of and demonstrated extraordinary achievements in the course of the war. With the notable exception of Italy. They were hands down the most unimpressive of the major powers. Really in two consecutive world wars even.

Well that too. We would have just blockaded the Japanese.
But there’s also the consideration that Japan lasts longer than they did in our timeline. The guilty secret is the Japanese saw what the Soviets were doing to the Chinese and the Koreans and wanted none of that. I think the most rational argument against nuking Japan is that they were going to surrender anyway just to get the Americans protection from the Soviets.

Nothing against Genghis Khan because he’s one of the greatest conquerors of all time; but I disagree. And it was his descendants that truly conquered most of the known world.

I don’t because they were so evil that they were counterproductive to a ridiculous degree. Why not send the Jews to the front lines as canon fodder instead? Instead they depleted a massive amount of military and civilian resources to an idiotic and disgusting genocide.

He got the ball rolling and conquered as much territory as a man living in to his sixties feasibly could. Ogedai was too big of a drunk to actually get the ball rolling. He deserves the primary praise of the Khans and great conquerors in general.
