Having been to both UVA and Tulane, Tulane is not as well known outside of Louisiana or the Deep South.
I would order them as
Vanderbilt
Emory
USC
Tulane
But Tulane is still well regarded regionally.
ETA: will also add the the quality and drive of the student when I was there pre Katrina is not on par with UVA. Just a lot more relaxed and carefree at Tulane. These are students who are very gifted but couldn't muster up the drive to get into Ivy

Private schools are tough because each region has their own really well thought of scchools. Williams and Amherst are just shy of the Ivy Leagues in the northeast, but no one else cares.

Stanford
Northwestern
Duke
MIT
Ivy Leagues
Tier 2
Vanderbilt
Rice
Emory
Anherst
Williams
Washington & Lee
Tufts
Tier 3
Tulane
Richmond
Temple
Dennison
Union

Chicago and CalTech certainly belong in tier 1, as does , probably, Johns Hopkins. Carnegie Mellon, ND, WashU, Middlebury, and Swarthmore should be in tier 2.

There's an old joke in legal circles on this point.

Northwestern ahead of "Ivy League"? In what universe? Agree on Stanford. Never met a Stanford grad who wasn't razor sharp.

That's pretty inaccurate considering how much of the student body of each of those schools is from the northeast and returns there after graduation

Vanderbilt is far more respected than Tulane, but apparently Tulane is gaining and up to #39 in the US News rankings, fwiw.

What? Tulane is the safety school for thousands of yankees. People know of it in the Northeast and West Coast.
