Illogical? Or inconsistent?

Haven't had a good linguistics discussion in a while.

Both. Very much both. One prime example is the stupidity of “silent letters” in words. WTF is the purpose?

Trough
Rough

Very similar words with very different pronunciations. English is weird.

You can spell fish “ghoti”.

Gh as it sounds in rough.

O as it sounds in women.

Ti as it sounds in imagination.

We don’t even have a uniform way of pronouncing our vowels. Think about how difficult that must be for people to try and learn

Just FYI

"ough"

quote:

The sequence is ambiguous, having at least eight pronunciations in North American English and nine in British English; its pronunciation depends entirely on its placement in a given word

If you keep pronouncing any word over and over again it starts to sound very strange. Almost to the point that you forget what it means. It's a weird phenomenon.
