I had an employee with an Ivy League undergrad in math with two graduate degrees from Ivy League schools (one in engineering) that did this exact thing. That employee convinced me Ivy League degrees were worthless.

It’s crazy, with the olds I can kind of get it, they still have every opportunity to learn, but I get it.
But I’ve had the same experience. Our new associates, no matter what school, seemingly know nothing more than the extreme basics, and they’re smart kids. I really don’t blame it on them, it’s not being taught to them. I’m on two business school advisory boards and I bring this up every year. Both schools do a good job at of teaching their kids the fundamentals of finance and accounting, but none of them can use the shite they actually need to use in practice

I agree that the schools don’t help, but there are plenty of resources out there for self learning. My skills were all self taught (I had work pay for a few excel “trainings” and found I knew more than the instructor).
After that employee I required every applicant to prepare an excel template based on a set of assumptions supplied by me, and had them explain their work as part of the interview. It really weeded people out.

Funny seeing people feeling all smug bc of “excel” skills.

The excuse is "we don't use it." Many of us don't use spreadsheets in our daily work.
What pisses me off is engineers who send an email, and instead of typing the message in the body, put the message in an attachment, which is typed in Excel. WTF would anyone use an Excel document to send a message that would be better created using a word processor? Also, why send an attachment in word, word perfect, excel or any other such program, unless you are inviting revisions? You assume that the recipient also has that program? Common sense says you send docs in a format that everyone can read, such as pdf.

What if your job was to dig holes with a shovel all day. You might be a little slow with Microsoft excel if asked to do it randomly? After all A.I. can do your entire days work in less than a millisecond so you should be a little bit more grateful for what you do have.

I hate pivot tables and people who create them are always douches.
This is why you pull Excel into Tableau or Alteryx, either of which could also be called Pivot Tables for Dummies.
Try it, you'll like it.

I didn’t know professional service firms had hole diggers amongst their employ

There really isn't' time in the undergrad curriculum to do much excel training. I gave a managerial class a spreadsheet assignment and it nearly broke them, even after we went over all the things they needed to do in class.
However, graduate MSA programs typically have a Data Analytics and/or Advanced AIS courses. When I teach those, I always give cases that require students to use either Tableau or Alteryx.
Christine Cheng at Ole Miss (formerly at LSU) has some fantastic cases published on using these tools in accounting courses.
It is a lot of work to grade a spreadsheet assignment and students cheat, which is frustrating, especially when the smart student puts their name in the footer and the dummy who copied it doesn't remove it. You then have to report both students to the academic integrity board who might let you give both a 0 on the assignment.

I had several large case studies in undergrad where at least the basics can be baked in, I’m not talking about advanced stuff. Learn how to write an if statement, learn control shift down, etc. this stuff should take an hour and they can do any supplemental learning if they can’t get it in office hours or on their own

We hire 80%+ graduate degrees, they still suck

I'm sick of dragging these kids down the halls of learning. Are you hiring?

Where, when and how to apply? I don't have a fake email account for the OT, but guess I can make one.
