Is There an Alotted Time an Employer Must Give a Worker Between Shifts?

I work nights and was told today on Thursdays I now have to work a day (7-5:30) shift. I get off at 12:30am on Wednesdays(sometimes later).

After I drive home, eat, shower and get to bed that's at least an hour, probably more, then get up around 6:15ish, that's about 4 1/2 hrs of sleep max. AND I usually have to drive a company vehicle with others in it during work.

Is this legal? Can they really make you work two full shifts that close in time to each other?

I think it's 8 hours. Can't remember. Don't work shift work but hear enough people whine about it.

However, for most employees, neither federal nor state labor laws require a minimum amount of time off between shifts.

I work for the state, hopefully there is some kind of law on the books for state employees. This fricking sucks if I can't get out of this… gonna be crashing into people at 10am. Hell I haven't gotten up before noon in years. 8 am is like the middle of the night for me.

When we had to stay past 12 hrs the company would provide a meal. If we stayed past 16 they had to provide a place to stay or give us 8 hours off.

Yeah...I'm not sure if there are any directives regarding government employees. I recommend that you talk to Personnel.

In Louisiana, 8 hour break in between shifts, I think. That is what it was for me. I couldn't work more then 16 hours at a time too!

Damn... I once worked 18 hr days for almost a week straight in New Jersey, still had to be in at 8 or 9am regardless. Also worked 22 straight days with no off day once. I should've sued the shite out of my employer.

That's why they call it a turnaround. I'm sure you're one of those trashy people on here that brag about not going to college tho.

Who purposely brags about not going to college? You assume I'm trash because I said the word "shift??"

I'm a college graduate and I am not unionized, I supervise a transportation/shuttle program for a local university, it takes students places that don't have cars and there's an off campus dormitory too that people have to get too.

The drivers have to have a break so I have to drive sometimes. They drive til 12:30am and i have to be there to lock up the keys and check the vans back in.

It's an extremely cush job but the hours suck… I've turned into a vampire, but I have no kids so it's not a huge deal. No way I could do it if I had a family I never saw.
