I recently spent time in both. They have some redeeming qualities. I saw the the sights and heard the sounds of Broadway and Beale.

You also have some nice counters with each:

Blues vs Country
NBA Grizzlies v NHL Predators
Each has a Triple A team
Titans spent time in both cities
Each has a lower level bowl game
Mississippi River / Cumberland River
Neither has a flagship university, but each has a big school

Similar in population, and the next largest is pretty distant.

As an outsider, I am curious if there is a constant pissing contest between residents of the two.

Interested in your criteria for “flagship university” and how Vandy isn’t included in that definition.

I believe it’s usually reserved for public institutions

I think at one time there may have been a little "friendly" rivalry.

But not any more.

I live in Memphis and people here acknowledge the only thing better about living here versus Nashville is cost of living. Work and family ties are the main reasons anyone lives here, most affluent young people leave once they become adults.

There are three states in Tennessee west middle and east and they obviously get progressively better the further you go east
