A good seafood gumbo is in my top 3 favorite foods. A good chicken and sausage gumbo is not too far behind.
I prefer seafood gumbo to boiled crawfish.

Tomato’s in gumbo and soggy okra are my pet peeves. OP has a point, really good gumbo is as rare a virgin in college

Nearly 1,000 downvotes later we return to ground zero to search for bodies.

I'll bet you don't believe in the holy trinity either...

We made a gumbo one time that folks would ask me about years and years later.
Our gumbo is a command performance at my place of work.
Don't hate the playa...

Jambalaya is shite too.
The rice and something spicy thing is played out af and the Iranians own that cuisine.

There are some bad “gumbos” out there, but a bowl of the real thing is transcendent. I’ve studied my mom’s version for decades and can make a reasonable facsimile of it on my own, but a piping hot bowl of her best gumbo on Christmas Eve (with all the trimmings and 14 different pies for dessert) is something I’ll never match.
Of course, she makes her own roux, hand chops all the veggies (and grows half of them to start with), and serves it as the centerpiece to a meal that includes more homemade side dishes than Piccadilly. Prep for the meal starts about a week beforehand, and she’ll be up making her roux at 4AM for a 7PM dinner. It requires a specific brand of French bread (from some N.O. bakery), fresh shrimp straight off the boat and fully deveined by hand, and ample use of everything she grows in her gardens.
When all of that comes together and we sit down to eat with our small family, there’s not a meal anywhere that can compare. We can go to bed that night fully confident that no one else anywhere in the world is happier than we are.
So, no, gumbo is far from overrated.

Everybody's had a thousand different gumbos made by a thousand different Moms, grandmothers, aunties or whatever the frick else and they all think their's is the best.
Gumbo is fine. Everyone likes it but the OP is right. At the end of the day, it's frickin' soup.
