It was 2000 and all of us who watched it live (way before DVRs) talked about it at work for days. It was one of those things you will always remember if you did watch it live. I remember without watching it too because it was the summer show along with Survivor that captured summer audiences back then.
Yep.

Is this the part where I'm supposed to pretend you didn't click the link yet miraculously remember the exact response to a phone call from 1992?
I Didn't click the link and did remember it. He was the first gameshow contestant to win a million dollars. But whatever dude. Pretend whatever you want to. Pretend that the new receptionist is going to hook you up, and that you are not a sour bastard.

Everyone remembers that phone call.
John Carpenter. That was huge when it happened. DVR didn't exist and the internet was in its infancy. Everyone was talking about that from middle school playgrounds to corporate board rooms the next day.

1999 was a very, very good year.

Regis talking Norm out of wining the million dollars is up there.

Regis's Millionaire run was appointment television. Similar to early American Idol (though smaller scale) everyone was watching. It was a simple format that was executed perfectly. I feel like newer game shows are all flash with a focus on the individuals personal life and less on their skill. I don't want to see a 5 minute montage video on a contestant. The WWTBAM format is great because you gradually learn about the contestant as he struggles through the show. By the time he is on the crucial $64,000 question you feel invested. Regis's ability to captain all of this was great.

Having a sob story is a requirement to be on a newer game show. That and you basically have to be a caricature.
