It's more likely sugar and over stimulation.
I don't pretend to know though. I'm a new parent. 2 yo. We try to do what's best for him... but as most parents will tell you, 50% of what you do is guess work. Kids are different. Situations are different. 10 different parents have 10 different approaches and given 10 different kids, you could end up with 10 different outcomes. It's just not that simple.

uh, its an invention. ADHD doesn't exist. Heres an excerpt from an interview by Der Speigel magazine with Dr. Jerome Kagan of Harvard

My brother was told by my sons teacher that they should consider putting his son on ADHD meds. A month after telling the teacher he was on them she started sending home reports about how well he was doing and that the meds are working.....He was never on any.

I actually do have it. Diagnosed by multiple doctors both medical and psychological.
I don't believe in suppressing my creativity and problem solving abilities. Which is exactly what that medication does. It changes you into a robot. I hated every second I was on the different ones I tried. My grades improved, but my ability to retain long term knowledge, problem solving, creativity, and almost every other aspect of my life suffered.
You can learn to deal with it and use it and live with it like an adult or you can cop out and take some drugs and die before you've really figured out how to live.

This is pretty much my son. He's 4 and is in PK4 at his new school. Before that in daycare. He plays all day outside on the weekends. Sweats his arse off. You get him cooped up indoors and he all over the place. You get him sitting down and not doing something for a long period of time he won't stay still. When we are out eating or any place where he needs to stay still and sit, its a tasks to get him to be still. It's the same when he is in school. He learns just fine, and discipline wise, the teacher says he is a well behaved kid. She just has trouble keeping him still, sitting down, and stop being so fidgety. I had all the same problems when i was a kid. My parents had me on ritalin when i was a kid, but I stopped in jr high. I don't plan on putting my kid on meds, especially now. But we will go see someone who can teach us, give us some tools on how to work on my kid to get him as straight as we can without using meds.

I don't remember much about how I felt physically and mentally when I took Ritalin. I started in 2nd grade and stopped when I was in Jr. High. But my mom told me that I asked to stop taking it because I complained I couldn't sleep and hated the way it made me feel...whatever that meant. I know now as an adult, that I have issues with short term memory because I am always distracted by pretty much anything. It's hard for me to focus, but when I do focus on something everything else goes dark. Like I won't hear any background noise and will completely block out everything. I was never really creative, but I am a problem solver. I never really had issues there. But I still have bouts of what I would describe as anxiety, and impulse control, and I need stimuli quite often. So I pretty much write the book on ADD.

Millions of kids are being put on drugs because they're parents are too lazy to provide structure for their kids. They let them run amok, give them ipads and videogames instead of making them go play outside. Then they go to class and they're tweaking from the stimuli and teachers, $ hungry DRs and pharmas turn little johnny into a pill head. Parents either provide structure and boundaries for your kids or don't have them. Its that simple
