I can think of a better way

Like perhaps inventing a story about seeing something you didn't see and then using it as the premise for a "Is there a better way to let everyone know you're a complete dumbass" thread.

25 years ago when I lived in Japan, it was customary, and considered polite and thoughtful, to wear a mask when YOU were sick in public. Also, what’s wrong with anybody taking any precautions they want ? I’m pretty sure it won’t hurt things to take any precautions that put your mind at ease.

I went to Trader Joe's this weekend and didn't see any masks. Lots of yoga pants though.

Am I an a-hole for buying masks in January or are hospitals irresponsible for not having a good supply on hand.

I side with the second. Hospital administrators are garbage.

You should be happy. The masks primarily prevent giving the disease to someone else.
