Younger generations are much less social in the real sense. They don't get to know their coworkers and they are often conditioned to not ask questions. It's a real problem.
Depends on where you work. What are you supposed to do, ask your supervisor who someone is any time you see them walking down the hall? If I see someone walking down our hall, I assume they are supposed to be there. They can't even get in the door without a key and/or unlock code.
The likelihood of some random business getting "hacked" is pretty low thus making a lot of the hoops users have to jump through in order to do their work a bit annoying, but it only takes one time to cause an issue.
We had a guy get his email account hacked and they were sending out emails with erroneous attachments to clients.
I think IT is very important to a business, but I would stress "in-house" IT. As a personal pet peeve, I cannot stand dealing with third party IT companies.
That said, I definitely think there is a subset of IT professionals out there with hugely inflated egos

If it's a vendor who is supposed to be there, 10 seconds won't slow their work. If it's not someone who is supposed to be there, you bring them to the front desk and get it straight.

3rd party IT finds and points out holes..This is why the Federal Govt mandates that some companies have outside audits..you're welcome

Random question, but how many of you folks in IT/cybersecurity have your security folks fall under the IT Director/CIO/whatever?
Just curious how many orgs are doing it the right way by having cybersecurity separate from IT.

I rely on Corporate for licensing mostly but my main support is IT security and compliance. We are highly regulated with multiple internal and external audits (SOx and FERC) going on at once.

Who do those three groups report to? Do you have a separate CIO and CISO? If so, do they both report to the CEO, or does the CISO report to the CIO?
ETA: Anyone else feel free to chime in as well.

We currently all report up to IT VP. We have about 10k employees fwiw.
ETA: I have an XYZ manager who reports to a sectional IT manager who reports to the VP.
The ITSEC side reports up a different way to the same VP. One spot below the VP is a manager who runs the compliance program. CPSD. I work closely with his group.

I think we do alright for ourselves
Like I said, I'm not expecting someone to hack our company, but I understand the need for us to jump through the hoops that we do.
Sorry though. Not gonna stop every stranger I meet in the hall to ask them why they're there.

Not talking about that.
