What's the difference between the outback and forester?

Outback is bigger and is a station wagon. You can get a six cylinder in the Outback.
Forester is more like the CR-V or Rav4....sort of a crossover/minivan thing without third row.

That's because the forester listed is the top of the line Touring model which jacks up the price on both the outback and forester significantly. The touring outback model is probably $39k.

They're much roomier now. I'm 6'4" and have no problems at all, even riding in the back seat. (2013 model)
Mine is every bit as big as my 4Runner in the interior.
I'm 6'2" and have plenty of room in the Outback. Even with my seat pushed way back there is still plenty of leg room in the back seat as well.

I'm seeing top of the line models for Outback at like 31k at my dealership and the Forresters are for some reason about the same with less features tho. Really odd.
Equally equipped the Outback is about $1,500 more. You can get a Forester Limited for about 28k.

I won't swear to it (haven't even tried to find stats) but my impression is that the Forester is a little more popular overall - maybe it's just supply and demand bringing the prices together.

Outbacks are probably the most popular car on the road in Oregon. I may get one because I need a new car and the resale value is good.

I think with lots of things you can tell how good something is by what people use in the most extreme conditions. If you want to see what the best outboard engine is for your boat, don't take the slightest glance at the truck nut yo-yo launching his boat at False River. Take a look at the dudes going on 40 mile treks offshore. Those guys know what's the most reliable
Yeah, any hiking trailhead here will be 80% Subaru.

And FWIW, I got every feature basically possible, including the bigger engine, in the fully loaded model Outback and it was I think 35k TTL straight off the assembly line.

Looking at the Forresters they look too expensive now. Cheapest I'm seeing is $28k. Didn't they used to be cheaper than that? Like $21k?

Ohhh...I see.

When I was a little younger, I had one with 140K miles. Never had one issue with it. Purred like a kitten.
Buddy I used to work with had one with 210K miles on it. Typical maintenance (tires, brakes, fluid changes, etc.) Only had to change the fuel pump. In 210K miles!
Buy it.

You can get a basic for $21-$23k depending on location and dealership. The avg. decently equipped probably runs $26k

Subaru isn’t charging much more for the updated version of its popular Forester SUV, but it also didn’t change the vehicle much. The 2017 Forester, which features mildly revised styling, a few new features, and additional sound deadening, costs between $125 and $525 more than the 2016 model, depending on trim level.
The base-model Forester, the 2.5i, is now $23,470 with its standard six-speed manual transmission, an increase of $225; as before, opting for the CVT automatic costs $1000 extra. The $26,370 Forester 2.5i Premium also offers a manual as standard, while the CVT version starts at $26,870. The CVT-only 2.5i Limited, at $30,070, and 2.5i Touring, at $32,170, are $425 and $525 more than last year. All of these models are powered by a 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder and come standard with all-wheel drive. CVT-equipped 2.5i Foresters also get a slight fuel-economy bump, with EPA city ratings rising 2 mpg to 26 mpg.
The more powerful turbocharged Forester 2.0XT also returns for 2017, with price increases of $125, to $30,170, for the 2.0XT Premium, and $525, to $35,170, for the top-of-the-line 2.0XT Touring. One significant change for the Touring model is the addition of Subaru’s brake-based torque-vectoring system from the WRX when you opt for the EyeSight batch of active-safety features. Both Touring models can be had with an exclusive Sepia Bronze Metallic exterior hue and a Saddle Brown leather interior trim package that’s new for 2017.

I meant from a grip standpoint. AWD means all 4 wheels can/will pull and will increase power to the wheel/axle that still has grip.

Recently got a 2016 Forester. It's a pretty sweet car. I really wanted a manual and that was the best option in its class. Outback look nice but don't come in manual transmission. Foresters and outbacks are actually really close in size. Outback is basically more station wagon and Forester is more suv. 2017 models for both should be coming out soon.

I drive a lot for work and the Crosstrek already gets at least 60 more miles to the tank than my Ford Escape did.
This is kind of a useless measure without knowing the size of each tank.

I've been using the CVT(continuously variable transmission) option on my Crosstrek a lot on mountain roads and love it. Obviously not a true manual but it's a great option to have.

Tanks seem to be similar when filled show around 400 miles to the tank. All I know is with my escape it was always right on that mark no matter how I drove and the Crosstrek gets around 460 miles so far.
