I don't think humans were designed/evolved to have this much connectedness.

Think about how much easier they were to deal with before the internet. Think about it.

There's a theory called the Monkeysphere

We can only really connect with a finite number of people

The monkeysphere

quote:

First, picture a monkey. A monkey dressed like a little pirate, if that helps you. We'll call him Slappy.

Imagine you have Slappy as a pet. Imagine a personality for him. Maybe you and he have little pirate monkey adventures and maybe even join up to fight crime. Think how sad you'd be if Slappy died.

Now, imagine you get four more monkeys. We'll call them Tito, Bubbles, Marcel and ShitTosser. Imagine personalities for each of them now. Maybe one is aggressive, one is affectionate, one is quiet, the other just throws shite all the time. But they're all your personal monkey friends.

Now imagine a hundred monkeys.

Not so easy now, is it? So how many monkeys would you have to own before you couldn't remember their names? At what point, in your mind, do your beloved pets become just a faceless sea of monkey? Even though each one is every bit the monkey Slappy was, there's a certain point where you will no longer really care if one of them dies.

I actually disagree somewhat. I think the internet has given people the ability to substitute friendships and romantic relationships with parasocial relationships like you see on Twitch or OnlyFans, respectively. I think these are perverse facsimiles of what we crave to make us happy and has caused us to become more disconnected than our predecessors ever were.

Community involvement and real life friendships needs to be something that is valued over farming upvotes/lines on the internet if you want a happier population.

I think the curse of the internet is that we’ve seen a perverse and failed value system that is the antithesis of what brings about human flourishing propagate like a virus over the internet and create an entire generation of nihilistic and lonely outcasts. And because of the ability to wield a pseudo-morality as a weapon thanks to social media, many people are frankly afraid to even begin to point this out in real life.

Well put and I think this along with the increased division of groups, ability to disseminate propaganda will lead to more civil war and WW.

Although, weird as it is, constant interaction with people, even in a faceless and "nameless" setting like this place.

Well, there are more than a few of you I consider friends, even more than people I've interacted with in person.

The internet is a strange land.

The biggest thing I’d miss is streaming LSU baseball.
It’s also a pretty great tool for learning different things.
But I can certainly waste too many hours on my mornings off watching dumb meaningless things.

This was the main theme of Blake Crouch’s latest novel: that increasing human intelligence is not the means to save us from destroying ourselves, but the need to break free of the limitations of our tribal monkey brains and be able to empathize with a greater number of people.

I thought it was in interesting point, though the whole book just felt like an exercise to get that point across at the very end. Nowhere near as good as his previous works.

I kinda feel bad for those guys who were in college right before social media hit big with MySpace and such..like if it was inevitable.

This awesome new way to get laid, knowing someone in every city you visit..without having to put work in..I mean. .feel like many more doors were opened.

Unfortunately everyone's parents also wanted to join in on the keeping in touch.

I was at Lsu Fall of 96 through Spring of 00. Definitely no Myspace. You just had to go to bars. It wasn't difficult to meet girls otherwise.

I know a person who maintains social relationships with well in excess of 500 individuals.

Easily in excess of one thousand people.

Most folks I know that know him don’t know that I know him.

I am amazed at the number.

My number is around 150-175.
