Is the era of giving references dead?

Chick at work asked if she could use boss as reference and he said that company policy prevented him from giving any references and the only thing the company could release was job title and dates of employment and the only ones who could do that was the corporate office. Seemed kinda different to me but he told us that for the past 10 years or so, that's pretty common.

The company I work for has the same policy.

That's a pretty prevalent HR policy. People do, however, continue to provide references on an informal basis.

our company does this and will confirm salary and it must come from HR.

Boss said it was because a guy somewhere killed a bunch of people and the company that sent the references got sued because the references didn't reflect him or some shite.

From what I've seen companies never checked the references anyways. Seen numerous people get jobs they had no business having and a simple reference chrck could have solved that, although I don't know if a reference would speak badly of a past associate

For real, it does have to do with liability concerns.

HR only confirming employment dates is pretty standard. I dont think they can lawfully disclose salary though (OT lawyers chime in).
If they provide a direct reference, i'll preface it saying, "this is off the record" and that gives them freedom to talk usually

I was expecting the story to end with a reference to TPS reports.
Good to see those kind of references are still going strong.

True story, in the 90's a group of us collaborated for years, when needed, as refs. Every phone number given with a bosses name were to specific friends based upon specific needs. Employers had no idea and we all lied our asses off.
In short? Let your mom answer a ref call. Who cares.

Many places these days will only confirm dates of employment.
But I would say it can be dependent on the position. A couple of years ago, I was on the search committee for a local high school that was hiring a new president. We not only asked for references, for the 5 semi-finalists, we either visited in person every single reference. One of the candidates was from Denver and myself and another committee member flew to Denver to have in person meetings with each of the five references the candidate listed.

Every company I've worked for the past 10 years have had that policy. I can't give any information on the record about a good or bad employee, just confirm dates of employment.

Probably not for two reasons
1) The reference is afraid of getting sued if they say anything negative.
2) If you have a low opinion of someone, they're not going to use you as a reference.
