It works because if you use an Arctic projection, the arctic is the midpoint of the route, which is coincidentally the most accurate point of the projection. Other routes get jacked up in the process farther away from the center of the projection.
For instance: Johannesburg to Sydney in real life is a shorter flight than Dalles to Shanghai. (12 hours vs 14 hours), however looks 3 times as long using an Arctic projection since both cities are farther from the center of the map.
