It’s never to late to learn new skills. You should think about learning how to swim. It doesn’t seem like it would be that hard for an adult to learn quickly.
I couldn’t imagine not knowing how to swim. Being around and in water is a huge part of my life.
I know this. I will not lie say there isn't an element of embarrassment to it. Anyone who wants to teach me wants to do it in front of a crowd. I actually have the idea down if I know I can touch the ground. It's when I can't touch the ground that I am not comfortable. Should I have kids I will make this a priority regardless of myself.

You can learn in the 3 foot deep section.
No shame involved

Since the 1940s MIT requires passing a swimming test to graduate, it is a strictly enforced rule, they will hold your diploma until you pass.
Cornell University, University of Notre Dame, Columbia University, Williams College, Bryn Mawr, and Hamilton College also require students to pass a swim test to be eligible for graduation.

Seeing as the Earth's surface is over 70% covered by water, I'd think yeah, it's pretty important to know. But, I'm not a parent...

My dad always told me growing up that if, heaven forbid, something ever happened to me he was going to make sure it wasn't drowning. I don't remember not knowing how to swim (have a God-mother's who's a red cross instructor sure helped).
I'm making sure the same thing goes for my kids. My 5 1/2 and 3 1/2 year old boys have been in swim lessons every summer along with lots of family pool time, and the other day at a pool party they were swimming all over without any floaties at all. Still gotta keep a close eye on the littler one since he's over confident, but he's getting there.

Taking it a step farther, learning how to calmly float is a much better skill to learn. Most people can't swim far... But if you learn how to float you can always fall back on floating if you can get in a pickle. I can float so well that if I jump in a pool with my hands tied behind my back and my feet bound together I can still float with no issue. I'm not even a strong swimmer, but I know if I get in a bind all I have to do is float on my back.

Yes for wasp. Everyone else not so much. Not sure why but everyone I know did the teaching your baby to float crap too when they were like 6 months old.
Maybe wasp have an exaggerated fear of drowning??

Statistics say, more than likely.

Until the mid 70's, public swimming pools didn't let black people swim. So today's kid's grandparents never learned to swim, therefore never taught their kids to swim, therefore today's kids aren't being taught to swim.
It certainly didn't help but it's still no excuse on the individual level. Just about everywhere in the United States you're within an hour drive of a body of water like a river, lake, Pond or stream.

No, people that didn't QT for WSQ had to go back once a year. Sure as shite, there were many that still didn't know how to swim.

So...how is him being black any different than if he were white, asian or hispanic? If his parents didn't teach him to swim, they made 71% of the planet's surface deadly to him. I would say that puts the parent of the year award in jeopardy for them.

I could swim by the time i was in kindergarten. I would go to pool parties and there were kids older than me in floaties that were afraid to go under water and I was like a damn submarine. Never could understand, and still don’t, why kids are so afraid to even put their heads under water. My kids, if I ever have any, will be great swimmers. They’ll be in the water too often to be afraid of it.

It is amazing how many people in Louisiana who spend so much time in or near the water cannot swim without holding their heads out of the water.
Posted on 7/10/18 at 2:56 pm to 13SaintTiger
It is certainly a necessity. I remember, some college did not allow graduation until you could pass a swimming test.

My wife bitched at me and asked me if I even know how to parent bc she loves the water. Will play in her tub and kitchen sink.
She’s ready to swim and I’m ready to start her off
