Whenever I meet someone who never learned to swim or they learned to swim late in life I automatically assume a) a parent wasn’t around b) they grew up in a broken home c) they had shitty parents who thought just putting food on the table was enough to be a good parent.

Ironically, my hypothesis primarily rings true for many of my minority friends.

I have a black friend that can't swim. Did he have bad parents?

It’s a pretty essential survival skill imo.

Yes along with proper manners of saying ma’am and sir to their elders.

There were always a ton of people that joined the Navy who couldn't swim, typically from the Midwest where maybe because of cooler weather there were less swimming pools, and time spent in water activities.

My parents didnt teach me to swim. They paid for membership to the country club where I taught myself to swim.

I'm not teaching my son to swim. He is currently taking lessons from an instructor.

Until the mid 70's, public swimming pools didn't let black people swim. So today's kid's grandparents never learned to swim, therefore never taught their kids to swim, therefore today's kids aren't being taught to swim.

An American black girl won the silver medal in swimming t the last Olympics. If only it weren’t for the systemic racism of the public pool system in the 1960’s she would’ve won gold.

I had great parents but I do not know how to swim. Pools were not that common in my area of the desert. I literally had to go to the casinos to jump in a pool

We went heavy on the learn to swim early and well idea. We put my 2 through the infant swim program to teach them to rollover, spit water out and tread water should they have fallen in a pool as a toddler then did a good bit of private swim lessons at our country club as they got older. They have been strong swimmers for a long time and was nice when we went to birthday parties we didn’t have to worry as much as most of the other parents. Also with most of our family members having pools and having a place at the beach I thought it was a very important thing to do. I also am a strong swimmer and it’s something I don’t think about, but am thankful my parents did it for me.
