It’s a tight rope
If you let them consolidate, there will be cuts in service and jobs, but it is orderly
If you block the merger, if both airlines stay afloat, it’s better, but if one crashes out, you still end up with consolidation and cuts and it’s a lot messier
It's really not a tight rope. Spirit wont be able to stay afloat. Its pretty obvious.
Have them merge and that way its less chaotic for the two companies and the people flying on the failed airline.
I believe the excuse was something about a monopoly.....but if Spirit goes under there be one less airline no matter what.
Also merging would allow Jetblue to serve destinations that they may not currently serving (I don't know if Spirit fly to destinations Jetblue doesn't).
It's one of the main reasons why Southwest bought Airtran. They could now go international.

They got $50 million this morning and have to hit certain benchmarks to get another $50 million.
They live on… for now

As a bonus, but this would violate so many federal laws and international agreements, bring back smoking sections on planes.
I always get a kick out of a few nonsmoking sections of some casinos that put the second floor as a nonsmoking gaming area with a big wide open area for the escalators that allow the smoke a pathway to rise to the second level. But one good thing is that, I see fewer and fewer smokers.

seems to be a common strategy in that industry, stay on the ventilator long enough and a strong airline will pick you up, all of the execs that ran it into the ground get huge bonuses or buyouts, employees are absorbed as charity cases, usually to the detriment of the employees at the stronger airline
Spirit’s C-suite just got millions in retention bonuses. Pretty wild they had the nerve to ask pilots and FA’s to take a pay cut.

Shockingly my last few flights I took on them were fine. The big upfront seat is the way to go. I also have travel insurance with my Amex so if they screw up and cancel then I just book another flight.

Thousands of people flying on planes they can’t afford to maintain properly sounds far worse

Most passengers just look at the price of a ticket. I was based in MIA when Eastern mechanics went on strike and those planes were full. Each bank had 1 or more jets returning to the gate for mx.
On the bright side, enough pilots have quit where they cancelled all remaining furloughs and reduced the number of captain downgrades from 170 to 25.

they all do that, they must have a manual or something, our idiots did that a little over twenty years ago, ran the company right up to the brink of the abyss(who would want to retain those idiots?) ask the emplopyees to bail them out in the form of huge concessions, and then give them retainer bonuses of approximately two years pay, the gubment threatened to intervene so they backed off but they did set up a trust fund(worth even more,) that creditors could not touch in the event of bankruptcy, which we eventually filed for, those stock options were worth gazillions when we came out of bankruptcy

Its critical that Spirit remain viable so that the people who currently fly on that airline dont start messing up life for people on the other airlines.

I'll miss them taking a lot of the undesirables off of other airlines.

What I don’t understand is the government wouldn’t let them and I believe JetBlue merge because it would like monopolize the business.
Government rejected the JetBlue / American codeshare.

Spirit is kinda reminding me of Northwest Airlines and they just need to go out of business.
Delta purchased Northwest and gave way to the DTW and MSP hubs.
