re: Is Speed Queen the best combination of quality and price in a washer?

My apt has a 20 year old speed queen drier. Finally just started fricking up.

I finally had to replace my 22 year old Maytags last month. This board and other reviews rated the 2017 model Speed Queens as excellent. I also read the reviews on the 2018 models which were not as positive but unfortunately the 2017’s were history. So I purchased a brand new Speed Queen TR 5000 washer and DR 5000 gas drier. To start, my washer was a DOA. Took a week for factory service. It was miswired from the factory. Now that it is running, it is so fricking noisy and doesn’t clean as well as my old Maytag. Lid latch locks while washing so you can’t open to examine clothes while cycling. The DR5000 drier is also very noisy. Sounds like something is loose internally which mechanic couldn’t find. 3/8 gas line instead of 1/2 on old Maytag so it takes longer to dry. To sum up, very disappointed in my new Speed Queen and wish I would have repaired my old Maytag. Buyer Beware!!! If you do decide to buy a Speed Queen, call every distributor in the area. Shop for the lowest price. They all tell you that SQ fixes there prices. This is BS. Wide price differences between distributors.

Many other mass-online review sites had them looking pretty mediocre.

I just bought a w/d myself. I researched for about a week and decided that basically no good objective data exists for comparing brand to brand. I scoured the internet for floor models. Wound up finding an absurd deal- got a Samsung frontloader through Best Buy for something near $250 (retail ~850). It doesn't even have noticeable scratches or missing parts. Didn't have as much luck with the matching dryer, mainly because I wanted gas, so I paid almost full price there.

When I bought my washer the store I bought it from delivered it, installed it, and made sure it came on properly. Serious question did your store not do that? I would have refused delivery of that washer. Then the store and Speed Queen could have figured it out.

Wait. They ditched the transmission for 2018 and went with a smart motor.
Yeah let's go from Copying old Maytags and now start copying the shitty GE hydrowave.

I'm not a fan of mode shifters and such. I need to look up the new sq to get more info.

The last speed queen class I had was 2015. I don't work on enough to justify gong to dallas to train.

Bet it takes less than$100 to fix it.

2014 was a sad year. When the term "direct drive" was transferred from the classic motor transmission set up to the fixed rotor/stator design.

The old machines had cheap parts. The new ones don't. No one will put $200 into a $400 machine.

Wash pods are a sham. Just run a cycle with bleach.

Machines that don't have a way of instantly stopping the tub during a spin cycle (brakes) must by law remain locked until the motor has stopped moving plus three seconds.
