Is praying for someone selfish?

I've always considered my prayers on a level of a personal relationship with my savior. Is praying for others a selfish act thinking you know someone else's best interest or controlling in the sense that you know their path or truths? This has always confused me.
Just seems recently I've heard people talking about praying for others lately. Figured the OT was the perfect place to get thoughts on this matter...

I always pray that I'll find a gf one day but I guess my life is like that Garth Brooks song.

I hate it when they ask for stupid shite like passing a test. Yeah I guess that's on the same level as getting cancer.

Good figuring right there. O.T. Lounge is the name, epistemology is the game.

Its not selfish at all to say a small prayer for someone. If someone needs to be prayed with is a different story (still not selfish, but may need to be a longer more indepth prayer needed) but just to say a little prayer for God to put his hand of protection/Healing on someone is absolutely ok.

I pray only for knowledge of God's will for me, and the power to carry that out.

To an omnipresent being, why not? Nothing is too big or too small.

I've always had questions about prayer.
If God is going to do whatever He thinks is in your or someone else's best interests, then why ever say any prayers except prayers of thanks?
What's the deal with prayer lists? Does God have a bottom threshold where he is more likely to consider a request if a certain number of people are praying?
Why are so many prayer requests thinly veiled gossip? "Please keep the Jones family in your prayers - they're having marriage problems."
I stopped saying any prayers of request after a friends 10-year-old died of leukemia and there had been, literally, over a thousand people around the world praying for the kid. I figured, what's the point?

Scientists recently discovered a 200,000 year old advanced civilization in Africa. Abraham (to whom Christian / Jewish / Muslim god first revealed himself to) lived about 4000 years ago.
The bible needs to explain why god did not deem people worthy of his attention for the 196,000 years before that. Are they all in hell? Heaven? Not saved? Purgatory?

It's not selfish, just pointless. But it is often used as a "look at me" by people trying to appear morally superior.

I always thought praying for yourself was selfish. Doing anything no matter how small for someone else could never be selfish in my book. The other good thing about praying for someone else is that it can be completely anonymous and you can do it as often as you like.

It's pretty much the worse thing you can do for someone. Just saying
