re: Is poverty the common denominator of every major social problem?

Rich people aren’t out committing violent crimes. People brought up in stable two parent households with a moral center generally aren’t out committing violent crimes. Crimes are committed mostly by poor people. It’s just a fact.
People aren't poor because of their upbringing. People were far poorer in the 19th and 20th century but still most people were born to two parent homes. I can't speak for crime because I don't have statistics in front of me, but I doubt it was higher then. But to be fair, when everyone is poor, what is poor? It's all relative.
Here's the two reasons people are poor (and commit crimes):
1) IQ
2) Mental illness
Rich people don't commit crimes because they aren't mentally ill (if they were, they wouldn't have been able to become rich). Moreover, it is a well known fact that rich people have higher IQ's, on average. IQ is mostly genetic and is not something that changes over the lifetime more than a few points. And studies have shown that high IQ people with no education are much more successful than low IQ people with the same level of education.
Mental illness does not correlate with IQ (it hits all groups of people equally). So you can have a high IQ person with mental illness who ends up being on the streets or a criminal.
There are cases of seriously mentally ill people being successful, but they are outliers. It mostly happens in the arts. Many famous writers, artists, and poets were batshit. If it weren't for their talents, they would have been homeless or criminals.
So all in all, I would say mental illness is a huge problem. The poorer you are, the less likely it is that you will get treatment. And treatments today can be successful. In the old days they just locked you in an institution somewhere. Those institutions don't really exist anymore, so prisons have replaced them.
IQ we can't change, so there's not much we can do other than insuring there are jobs for that group of people.

one room house without running water and quite possibly a dirt floor.
That's not poverty. That's being away from technological advances.
My grandmother grew up in west Virginia in the 20s-30s without indoor plumbing.
They were considered well-to-do because they had a radio.

Seems like a fine line

Yes, poverty. Impoverishment both results from and leads to lack of education, opportunity, traumatic experience, crime, etc. Its a never ending cycle and it doesn’t matter what race you are, ignorance is ignorance.

And they probably lived under the poverty line as did most Americans at that time. My great-grandfather was considered well off because when he came home from WWI he bought the first Ford Model-A in the holler where he lived. But they were still dirt poor farmers living below the poverty line.
People were far more poor and poverty in general was far more prevalent then that it is today. A large, thriving middle class wasn’t seen in this country until well into the 20th century, really not until after WWII.

A middle-class wasn't seen in the world until then.
You cant hold today's idea of poverty against back then.
If you had your own farm, you were not in poverty. A cow was worth more to you than paper money or gold. Same with a goat or pig.
They provided you with your necessities, not the general store.
Bank savings were not as important to people back then because retirement was not a thing.
You know when retirement became a goal? When social security was implemented.
Before the New Deal (which dumber conservatives call the worst thing ever--its socialism dammit!) There was no such thing as retirement. There was no such thing as a pension.
Poverty back then didn't mean no money like today. Money wasnt as important to live day to day life.

Define poverty in 2020 for us then

Radix malorum est cupiditas
Or in da English... Da Bible say day the love of money is the root of all evil.
I prefer the greed is the root of all evil Latin translation better tho.

- have teen pregnacy - (solved by abortion)
-drop out high school
-runaway

-stds
Everything I've bolded I've noticed in wealthy two-parent household products of the Baton Rouge Private Schools.
Bored kids with money are pretty much as fricked up as everyone else their age.
They just have more resources at their disposal to fix their mistakes.

So it’s parenting right?

Honestly, I think its technology.
We dont have enough to do. So boredom leads to getting into trouble.
Back in the day when the whole family had to work the farm at all hours, there was no time to get into trouble. You were too busy or too tired.

Reasonable reply, but I now know you don’t have kids

Disregarding outliers, I'd say yes. This country is more class based than race based. The races just make it easier to pick a side.

1) shite culture.
2) government.
Basically a chicken and the egg argument.

That’s actually not far off what I think as well.
I read a lot of other forums where it seems like so many of the people on there are poor as shite, and damn if EVERY SINGLE STORY by those people doesn’t start with being unable to work due to depression/anxiety or a physical disability.
Now obviously depression and physical disabilities are not exclusive to poor folks, but I’ve seen it at the beginning of so many of these people’s posts that I sometimes question whether there’s a script or something.
I don’t know what we can really do. I mean, it sucks that some people are smart and healthy and able to succeed while others aren’t. But I don’t really know the answer to that problem.

It’s like watching intervention. Every person in that show has some sad sack reason they became alcoholics or heroin addicts or huff paint

It’s funny you say that because I was just thinking that it’s like watching My 600lb Life. There’s been so few people in all the years the show has been on that had an actual job.
Most of them stopped working long before they reached that level of obesity. They’re all poor and on disability. They have family members helping them out, which they’re often dragging down with them. Only a handful of them have had a decent level of intelligence, personality, etc.
It really sucks knowing there are people who were born to have everything against them - be it their IQ, mental illness, their upbringing, etc. There’s not much we can do.

You must have been raised in a poor family.
I was.
But I don't think that has anything to do with it.

Destruction of the nuclear family
It's this. And no, it doesn't necessarily require a male and a female parent but I think there is a lot of value to having two different genders in the household to create balance.
It's more of an issue of time management. One parent can't do proper parenting for one child much less multiple children. All kids really need is love, attention and structure. It's hard to provide that in a single parent household if that single parent is working 40 hours a week.
There's a reason society started to fall apart in America when women went to work. And no, it doesn't matter if it's women or men staying home, as long as somebody is home to care for the children. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that we don't live in multigenerational households anymore so there's no grandparents or extended family at home to raise the children either. We have whole generations of adults that were raised by strangers in daycares and government facilities.
To me, the problems start there.
Go back to a single-income household or two part-time working parents and learn to live off of less.
Profit.
