How else is he supposed to get to practice and to games? If he wants to make the older kid's team he has to prove it in practice, so for the next couple of months it'll be practice 4 times a week. Games two weekends a month for 8 months out of the year. I only have one child, and making sacrifices for him seems prudent. One more year until the school teams start...so it's not forever. He can ride his bike to those practices.

Completely disagree
We travel all over the nation to let my son compete in karate. He also plays baseball and basketball in school.
He only gets to be a kid once in his life.
As long as he keeps his grades up and works hard we are going to do what we need to do to allow him to experience as much as he can.
Right now we enjoy traveling and being together while we can.
Too me.....I’m always gonna put my kids first and foremost. I’ll put my wants first when they are grown and out of the house but for now I’m gonna let them experience as much as they can.

Why do you laugh? Being a leader and playing multiple positions vs being a contributor 'up' and simply playing your role. Which sets you up for being the leader of the team in high school better?
And who knows if you get 'your' position on the older team anyway? You don't really get to pick spots coming from an age bracket below. Winning a starting spot isn't a promise either, not that it can't happen...but picking a certain position, when you do most things well, isn't the best mindset. My boy doesn't play the position he wants now 85% of the time. When he does he lights it up, but they need him more other places.

The only question I have for “travel ball” types is what’s the motivation. If your kid is truly on fire for the sport and interaction, then by all means. If they hem and haw, then it’s silly. I see too many instances of Dad pushing a kid for his own sake.
I don’t know any of you and I’m not projecting. Just stating my opinion.

Constancy of emotion from an 11 yr old boy is difficult. He can either be the best kid in the tournament or hide out there. Really though, you get both every tournament, just in what percentages?

Is it fair for the kid?

Be a star in his normal age bracket, or play up and just be a solid contributor. Which one is better for development?
Can I assume you simply have no athletic ability whatsoever so, you have no frame of reference?

Beating the shite out of people you can beat easily doesn't make you better.

Why would you say that? Be the focus of the game or come off of the bench? One has a shite load more pressure.

There's literally no one who will tell you that playing weaker talent is going to allow you to improve the way playing tougher talent will.
Now, I suppose if you're BARELY able to play up, then we can talk.
But hell. The kids I know who play up are typically STILL one of the top half of kids in the up group.
There's a friggin 7 year old here playing U12 in Soccer. He's one of their top scorers. I suppose he could beat the shite out of the U8 league. But why?

I played all the way up to Open division racquetball in my younger days.
The way I got there was playing a lot of Open dudes who kicked my arse for quite a long time before I finally caught up.

Pete Maravich never sat on his hands. That’s my only point. Some kids have the fire and it’s apparent. If it’s not apparent to you (not you personally) then the motivation is probably off.

Just to be clear, you’re talking about 11 year old boys soccer?
Posted on 4/5/18 at 10:05 pm to ShortyRob
its so hard to say. My son is the tallest fastest kid, can knuckle a ball in from 40 yards. The team one age group up was top 5 ranked in the nation 2 years ago. They are struggling and looking for a spark. My son in no way has training those boys do. Can he learn it and bust arse, probably...but there will he a learning curve. Will he be their answer...man that's fricking tough. Coach believes so. My boy lights up when we talk about it.
This will literally pipe bomb our traveling peer group, people are going to be pissed. The coach will approach the club and try to block this. The team he'll join are tight, and it'll be a struggle for him to gain acceptance. It's not an easy decision.
If he gets offered he'll go.

Because he’s 7 and would probably experience a lot more of life and fun playing with kids that also believe in Santa Clause than kids that talk about pussy?

Boy plays U12, will try out for U14.

I think it's a complete no brainer.
If your kid can legit be competitive at the age level up, you play him up.
If he's in by the skin of his teeth, meh, leave him down.
Whether he'll be a star his first year up or not isn't terribly relevant. It's about the level of challenge he'll receive every time he matches up against someone bigger or faster or both than he is.

I've watched him. He embarrasses most of the U12 boys.
It's just one of those things in his case. His dad is German. They've only been here a year. Kid had a ball on his feet while all his peers were pulling pacifiers out of their ears.
Honestly, from a playing standpoint, he would get NOTHING out of playing 8 year olds.
Frankly, I think he'd be competitive in U14.
