So let me get this right. You are asking what develops you better, dominating inferior talent or being rigorously challenged by bigger, stronger, and faster kids? I'm seriously at a loss...

Most kids that play up hit puberty early.. really simple..most don't last when kids catch up

I dont know if it is a badge of honor thing or not. Some kids really can and probably should play up occasionally. It is good to be humbled. The one year age brackets have created a monster. If you had two year groups you could see your kid be a weaker in his division the first year and develop and be a better player his second. I think that builds up a lot of good traits.
I do know that I am coaching my youngest in rec league tonight and you will hear 10 times as much crap out of the stands as you do in travel ball.

There is no difference between travel ball and competitive ball..if you live in a city there are plenty of local tournaments with out having to travel..teams that really travel..i.e. Dulin Dodgers are all huge kids

Real travel ball teams are real "major" teams, LA has terrible usssa director allowing you guys to rate as major, maybe one team in La is really major

It allows your kid to make varsity squad.. otherwise you see terrible pitching and play till 14...in Memphis area you don't make a high school team if you only play rec ball..my son played tournament local ball, rarely travelled an hour to play

There're developmental philosophies that you essentially disregard or forget when you 'get punched'. You basically revert to your instinct to survive. Developing a complete toolbox may be better for your development than going back to your one trick mindset that got you successful. ?

My 11yr old played a Mexican team a couple of weekends ago and two of the boys had full on mustaches and were huge. I'm not sure they were properly documented.
