I’d imagine the herd starts to thin around age 14. Not as many quality kids still playing at that age so they need more younger kids to play up? Especially in rual areas.

Understood. My boy wants to play possession soccer, and the team up does extremely well. They also play much better competition than he does now. We'll see. I'll bring him to their practices for the 2 months leading up to try outs, and he'll guest play when he can. He already has his player card for them. We'll see.

And I get that. But I coach youth soccer. A 7 year old needs to be a 7 year old. The Santa Clause reference wasn’t a throwaway. It’s real. A 7 year old lives in a different world from a 12 year old.
But if he’s German, he probably finished with “childish things” when he was 4.

All the boys are still there, some just haven't grown or progressed, the big clubs from high population areas are down selecting and getting stronger...you name it.

I hear you. Do what’s best for your kid. Good luck

IDK, my boy wants to kick footballs. I think soccer is going to be something he does for fun in high school. He competes at a high level now, and enjoys it. His high school team wins state about every other year, and the coach has known my boy for a long time. I see him watching...we talk and he's super excited to get him. He could theoretically play varsity in 7th grade...obviously though that's a stretch. He could also kick before he's a freshman.
He can crank it.

Let him dominate his age group.
First, you don't know how long this lasts, as in how long will he be an advanced player?
Second, some kids hit puberty really young. He's going to eventually go against a manchild in the higher age group and not enjoy it.

Lost me here, Bubba. For a team that consistently wins state championships? You’re delusional.

Stannislaus is an all boys school with grades from 7th-12th. I'm not making shite up. Kids play JV from Jr high, kid's run track and cross country, what part of this am I delusional about? It's a small place.

Im all for giving the kid an opportunity to reach his potential but u sound sick.

Dude, I’m intamately familiar with Stannislaus. And I’m calling bullshite on a 7th grader playing “varsity.”

That all sounded strange. My boy's just going to play and see what happens.
Obviously no kid's going to start or get significant playing time as a Jr high student, but it's theoretically possible. It's not against the rules.

Your are definitely one of the one's that ruin it for the kid and anyone around you.
It's only a badge of honor for Dad's that couldn't cut it and live through their kid. Also, dumbass, this may be the best he will ever be in his development as a player.

My son played up his first year of travel ball only because it started at 7U, and he was 6. He's played in his age group since. His development has been all I'd hope for, but that has more to do with the coaching hes gotten rather than the age of the kids hes played with.

The only reason I'd move him, whether up in this club or to another club (associated with the high school coach) is for quality of coaching.

I live in DC area and when my sons were playing soccer there was a huge problem with African immigrants. The parents would give them birthdays a couple of years younger to help them get ahead.
