I live in Eastern Pennsylvania and see confederate flags from time to time. Besides the accents, sometimes you wouldn’t know you aren’t in the south. Locals give it the nickname Pennsyltucky. A bunch of good ole baws who like to drive trucks, listen to country music, and hunt/fish.

ea Eastern Shore is the same way and so is central PA.

You see Confederate Flags in Pennsylvania? That's terrible.

ETA: why is this being downvoted? Pennsylvania fought in the Union?

I don't think I'm a huge fan of it just representing all rednecks. It cheapens it.

But north LA is definitely prototypical southern rednecks. (I mean that in a good way)

That's because that's not really LA

Oklahoma is Midwest. Everyone knows that. East Texas could be southern, but the state as a whole is not south. El Paso is not a southern city.

Delaware is not south by any reasonable measure.

Virginia, at least anywhere north and east of Richmond, doesn’t even feel too southern. More like an Atlantic coast type state, which I’d also put N Carolina in.

Oklahoma is not part of the South.

But the Missouri boot heel is very southern as are areas of southern Illinois and probably Indiana. Borders for regions are NOT state lines.

You could probably cut out most of south LA too.

LA north of I-10 is more similar to MS, AL, Northern FL, etc. than it is to southern LA.

Arkansas belongs there too. And the Florida panhandle.

I can assure you that places like Eunice are nowhere near similar to MS, AL, or FL

That’s my point. It’s more like the south. South LA isn’t really southern.

I would say no to OK and TX. They have more of a western feel than south. The only reason Kentucky and Virginia are considered the South is because people have accents there. Delaware and West Virginia the South? Lol

No.
Also of note, while historically part of the South, Virginia has nothing in common with Southern culture today.

Blanket statements of entire states is kinda dumb though.

The South is largely defined by historical parameters, not longitudinal ones. I.E. Nobody considers Hawaii, New Mexico, Arizona a southern state.

The Civil War defined this question. If your state committed treason by secession from the USA in order to preserve slavery in late 1860 to early 1861, then your state should be considered the south.

I fully expect the downvotes. So many ancestors of people reading this were drafted to perform treasonous acts against this man's country, but someone provide me with good evidence why this is wrong.
