I'd add the Cody area to this list.

You're right but to a larger extent this is one of the few times I'm glad I live in a rural area. Nobody is tearing up anything in Natchitoches right now.

There are some sketchy arse places in Washington and Oregon

The closer to the Pacific the better the scenery in those two. There are some straight up rednecks in both of these states away from the coast. I felt right at home

There are rednecks sure, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

Everything run down. Without exception every gas station makes you buy something and use a key to use their bathroom. I’m not used to that and it was annoying.

But the random drifters which seem endless were the scariest looking people I have ever seen

I’m going to Idaho in a month for 3 weeks. They are already in phase 3. I was told everything is opening up. And, I’m staying about 20 minutes from Jackson Hole. Ready to get out of Louisiana.

To put it in perspective my Washington and Oregon (also Northern California) opinions are based on a multi day road trip with my wife where we didn’t necessarily make a whole lot of specific plans, took small and scenic routes the whole way, etc. Not much interstate driving to speak of.

We did this trip because Ole Miss played Cal at Berkeley and I’d never seen that area of the country, flew into Seattle and rented a car and drove all the way to Berkeley (don’t want to talk about the game).

I think the scenery was unparalleled but I was just surprised how run down it was. I guess you can say that about most places, but the gas stations, drifters all pissed me off and above all else seemed impossible to find anything good to eat. It’s like the place has no identity.

In WA? There are a few run down areas like anywhere else but I'd hardly classify the whole state as "run down".

I think I just got unlucky with route selection

ETA Oregon was way worse for just random middle of nowhere. There were some nice areas of Washington I stumbled into. Unfortunately had the least time to spend in Washington

Also middle of nowhere Northern California way worse than either

Never once have I been really scared in the Pac NW and I've been to the worst areas.

I spent about 6 months in WA in the mid-late 90s. I found that the further that you got away from the Pacific/Cascades the more it reminded me of a lot of other states. Pretty rural and not much to see. I loved being up there though.

Lmao Rock Springs

Exactly the place in mind when I said largest trailer parks I’ve ever seen. And they have it displayed proudly atop the biggest bill in town just where you enter the town from the East on I80.

Sounds like your road trip took you through some of the old logging towns. Can't really do anything about that as the industry is gone. Some of those towns remind me of West Virginia in character but they are hardly the norm and definitely not representative of the whole state. Most of the 'ghetto' areas are just south of Seattle down to around the airport. And even those areas would be considered pretty tame in most cities east of the Mississippi.
