Not that it matters. But if you really look at all the Landrieus. You can see it. I don't want this to be a thread for racists to come in and foam at the mouth. Just wondering if any of you know if it's true or not. If it's true, I really wouldn't blame him for taking down the statues

I would imagine his great great great grandfather owned slaves and slept with them as well which was common in New Orleans back in those days. This would make his Great Great grandfather a bastard son in which Landrieu gets his blackness from.

One of his relatives... great grandma or something was listed on an early 1900's census as black.

Maurice Edwin ‘Moon’ Landrieu was a prominent Democratic politician and Mayor of New Orleans in the 1970s. His son Mitchell and daughter Mary are both Democratic politicians as well. During his candidacy for Mayor of New Orleans, Mitchell ‘Mitch’ Landrieu was criticized for not speaking openly about his supposed African-American heritage. This post will trace the Landrieu family’s roots.
Maurice ‘Moon’ Landrieu was born in 1930 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He shows up on the 1940 United States Census as Maurice Landrieu. His race is given as White. He is living with his parents, Joseph Geoffrey Landrieu and Loretta Bechtel. Loretta Bechtel is of German descent, with grandparents who came to Louisiana from Alsace and Prussia.

Joseph Landrieu, grandfather of Mitch and Mary and father of Moon, was born in 1892 in Mississippi. His race is given on the 1900 Census as Black. His race is given on the 1910 Census as White. His race is given on the 1920 Census as White. His race is given on the 1940 Census as White. Joseph’s father Victor Firmin Landrieu was French and came to the USA with his parents. Joseph’s mother Cerentha Mackey was born in Mississippi as the illegitimate child of a mixed-race black woman and an unknown father.

It is through his great-grandmother Cerentha Mackey that Mitch Landrieu has black ancestry, although this is probably only a small fraction of his heritage.

Godfather, I'm pretty friendly with Mary's son. I always thought he looked a little bit odd. He looked almost Cuban but he was "completely white." Imagine Steph Curry with great hair lol. I found out a few days ago, and it all made sense

what do you call black? - we are long past the one drop days. Mixed, absolutely, Moon's father Joseph is listed in census as black and later as white. His mother was born to a mixed race "black" women. i think most of their other ancestry is french and german. One of the provisions of her marriage to frank snellings was that they have no children because of this.

I usually think of a black person as having one black parent. I would still call them white. Idk, my mind is just kind of fascinated with how that came about in such a family, and now they are ruling the south. And when you look at them you really do see such slight but OBVIOUS African American features in all of them. Genetics is crazy

What happened to the "Mary and Frank are both gay" rumor? Is the Landrieu black heritage rumor replacing the gay rumor, or in addition to the gay rumor.

As a kid growing up in the 70's, I heard my step-father say many racist things about the Landrieu's especially Moon. He absolutely hated Moon, because he considered him black.

If Landrieu was even 2% black he would have said so by now. Believe that.

I remember Moon being called the first black mayor of N.O., but I always thought it was related to his liberal leaning and pandering for the black vote.

The black heritage rumors have been around forever. I remember during one of Mary's senate campaigns years ago I was talking to some old baw at a gun show who told me back in the day they used to call Moon Landrieu "Blacky Landrieu."
