An actual alcoholic? No. Their brains don't work that way.

Learning it and practicing it are two very different things.

no.

If you can practice moderation, you aren't an alcoholic.

Can a functioning alcoholic learn moderation? Maybe with some life style changes and exercise or something.

I have seen several alcoholics eventually (after a few years drinking nothing) go back to a couple of beers at a party or glass of wine at dinner.

Depends on the person.

Either they weren’t true alcoholics or it won’t last. An alcoholic will eventually return to problem drinking. It’s just a matter of time.

True alcoholics? Probably not.

People who are just immature when it comes to drinking? Absolutely.

A close friend in college was a complete buffoon when it came to drinking. When he drank it was to excess and it would lead to him doing dumb shite. But, if need be, he could stop drinking for a week in order to get important things done. Still, while most of his friends grew up and quit getting hammered on weeknights, he didn't quite as fast. He was just a friendly guy who like to have fun and didn't want to grow up. A group of other friends convinced him he was an alcoholic and encouraged him to go to rehab. After about a year of that he realized he was just immature and needed to grow up. Now, he can have a beer or two at dinner and just go home like any other responsible adult. Or, he can just sit at home and watch a game while sipping a whiskey drink without drinking himself to a blackout status.

Point being, he didn't NEED alcohol to get through the day. It just made things more fun. Once he realized he had to be an adult...he became an adult. I don't know if people truly addicted to alcohol can do that.

They weren't alcoholics then. Once you have one glass, then your brain goes out of control and wants as much of it as humanly possible. You just knew bad drunks. There's no going back if you're a true alcoholic.

There is a certain point the alcoholic is trying to get to...

Example - I had an ex, she drank 3-4 glasses of wine every night and a Mike's Hard lemonade (Sunday through Thursday) ... EVERY SINGLE DAY

She had to get that little buzz going.

On Friday nights we stayed up later and she drank more. Got ever further along.

On Saturday night's and at social events, it was much worse. She got drunk. Almost every Saturday regardless of who was around or what we were doing.

I bet we talked about her drinking 20 times in the 20 months we lived together.

She never checked up. There is a sweet spot - buzz place she is trying to get to every night.

Someone who is a alcoholic cannot control their drinking. They might the first couple of times, but it will eventually get out of control.

Actual alcoholics BAC never drop below like .1.

I've heard of people being guilted into going to AA for drinking a 6 pack because their folks were Baptist.

There's kind of a big gap there in the definition of alcoholic. Like other posters have said, there is no going back for the "true" alcoholics.

They can drink moderately, but they won't want to drink moderately. They can also go cold turkey. But there is a difference between dry and sober.
