I wish people understood how Amazon, walmart.com, or any of the marketplace sites worked.
If you see a product with a retarded retail price... it's almost 100% guaranteed that it's not the "retailer" selling it. It is some Joe Schmoe. It's a marketplace. It's ebay.
The "sold by" thing near the add to cart button tells you exactly who you are transacting with.

Amazon is selling the product for $83 a piece which is absolutely absurd. Is that even legal?
The first lesson in Economics is scarcity. There is not enough of anything to satisfy all those who want it. That's why prices exist. If there is a low supply of a product, then prices will naturally increase. If the manufacture didn't raise prices, then it would be sold out everywhere and you would have little to no chance to purchase the baby formula. The high price gives you the option to purchase it.

I’m sure there’s an FDA law about the amount of markup there can be on a medical product.
Ever notice how its hard to find gas after a hurricane? That's because government law forbids the gas stations from increasing prices after a natural disaster. So demand drastically increases (home generators) and supply drops from logistical disruptions from the storm, but government law forbids the market from reacting appropriately. Therefore, shortages occur. Some baw will pull up and fill 20 gas cans in the back of his truck because the gas price is cheap compared to his high demand of gasoline. Removing artificial price ceilings (gov. regulation against price gouging) would allow the market to adjust the price to the higher equilibrium price that would prevent hoarders from purchasing large quantities and allow a more equitable distribution of the gas. Yes, people will pay much more, and the poor will suffer the most, but there is no perfect solution. No economic system can prevent every shortage.
This is exactly what you're promoting by suggesting a price ceiling on baby diaper cream. You can bitch and moan all you want about the $83 price, but the truth is there isn't enough of the product to go around. No matter what, someone who wants it wont get it.
The longer the supply shortages last, the more monetary motivation is created for potential competitors to increase production to satisfy the high demand. Going back to the gas example, if government regulation was removed, then I guarantee you gas companies would ship in much more gasoline the days prior to the storm since they know it will be selling for such a high price. Ultimately, they would end up competing against each other and the high prices would not last long in most cases.

Damn professor.
I know it’s supply and demand. I’m in the car business. Just thought there was a price cap on things like that.
Found a mom and pop in Kenner and bought the entire shelf out. Got 20 boxes for $40

What's the active ingredient that makes it work?
Find an off brand with that.

Glad you found some. Permanent price ceilings are rare. The best example is rent control, where cities forbid renting out apartments over a certain price per square ft. It always leads to a housing shortage as landlords have no motivation to construct more apartments/houses to rent to fulfill market demand. The only winners are the people already renting, just like the first people in line to buy gas after a storm, or purchase baby diaper cream when a shipment comes in.
Price floors are more common in western economies (minimum price restrictions). The government has held these in place for minimum wage and milk for quite some time. As a price floor is the opposite of a price ceiling, the consequences are the opposite as well. So instead of shortages, There is oversupply, waste, and under utilization. Just a different form of inefficiency.

Amazon is selling
Probably not Amazon themselves directly, but still a crappy deal from who's ever actually selling.

I spent less than 2 minutes on the internet and found a local store (Baton Rouge) that carries it for $6.

It’s probably not the seller even actually setting the price. Amazon has some sort of automatic pricing algorithm that will adjust prices depending on other sellers’ prices, available supply, etc. Occasionally it goes crazy and prices a $5 item in the thousands or something like that. I would bet this is something similar.

So now you are the a-hole. You bought 20 boxes for a kid that hasn't even been born yet? Congratulations on helping with the shortage. Now other parents who actually need it now will have a harder time finding it.

I’ll sell it for half the cost of Amazon

I bought a new shower head on Amazon a few years ago for like $20. A year or so later they had the exact same shower head on my “buy again” list and it was $7,500. It happens.

Way to go, a-hole. Now someone an actual child with actual diaper rash can't find any on the shelf.

Ok, think about that attitude when you child is actually here and you need something now and some a-hole is hoarding.
Good thing you weren't a parent last year when the formula shortage was in full swing and your child needed a specialty formula.
