So you catch someone on video doing something unethical enough in the office or out in the field that will no doubt get them fired. You want the person to learn their lesson yet really don't want to get a man fired. Would it be illegal to show them the vid, then ask for $1000 to keep it quiet?

I don't think it is just here, but the internet in general. Seems to bring out all the dummies and nuts.

From experience this is 100% legal. You won't get in trouble at all.

Why only $1000?
To keep it legal. If you ask for a higher amount it turns into a misdemeanor.

That's day one shite, rookie. You start asking for 1,015 or 1,020, you're looking at serious jail time.

If you wanted this person to "learn their lesson", why wouldn't you just show them the video and have a discussion about it? You just want the $1000 because you're a greedy bastard and you think you'll somehow be less of a rat if you give him the chance to pay his way out before snitching.
Also, does this footage come from a security camera that you're required to check as part of your job, or did you take the video yourself? Depending on the state, it is illegal to record audio/video without the consent of all parties involved.

Its called extortion and its a felony.

Nobody learns shite from "discussions". You want him to remember, you make him pay. Give half of it to charity if it makes you feel better (but then again, you'll have to extort twice as much).

Here is the Mississippi Code:
quote:
(2) A person is guilty of extortion if he purposely obtains or attempts to obtain property of another or any reward, favor, or advantage of any kind by threatening to inflict bodily injury on any person or by committing or threatening to commit any other criminal offense, violation of civil statute, or the public or private revelation of information not previously in the public domain for the purpose of humiliating or embarrassing the other person, without regard to whether the revelation otherwise constitutes a violation of a specific statute.
