re: Is it customary to tip the car hops at Sonic?

Like 20% of people do. Sonic was my first job when I turned 16, and I made about $20 in tips per 4 hour shift.
Unless something has changed, none of them ~expect~ it from most customers. But yes, roughly 20% of them do give it. Most times it is the leftover coins. At most $1.

If I am at the drive through, then I do not tip. If parked, I give them a buck and whatever change I am due....I generally don't spend change anyway.

Ask your dad. He can’t take more than the tip.

Of course you tip. Only poors don't tip them

Yes.
# of items X $1
Divided by 2.88

No. I use my card to pay and you can't leave a tip on it so no tip for them

How much more do they make per hour? Most waiters work for tips alone, except in some states (like Nevada for example). But in a state like Louisiana waiters work for like $2-3 an hour or so, they essentially just work for tips.
We can talk about minimum wage problems for fast food workers about if it's high enough or not, but at the end of the day they technically are guaranteed more money when they clock in which is why they don'treceive many tips

I dine in at the new location that used to be a McAllister’s. I tip 20% as is customary

I swear this is a weekly topic on here.
I'll tip if I pay with cash but I usually only have a card. I've even told waitresses before to complain about not having a tip option with card receipts because I do like to give them a dollar or two

I've also read here that only poors carry cash. Quite the conundrum.

Times have changed though. The ones in my area try every trick under the sun to get a tip out of customers-no changer, “forgetting” how to count change, flat out asking if I want my change back, etc

They bring out your food the same as any waiter in a restaurant.

You sound like a royal cheapskate. It's not a trick but standard practice for people who work on tips. Unlike you, most people aren't interested in having a minimum-wage worker sit there and count their coins back to them.

Sonic carhops make minimum wage, so tips aren’t expected.
If they were, Sonic would let you tip via card.

If you tip at Sonic, it makes it the worst value of all the fast food places. Even if you dont tip, their food isnt great.
