Is it abnormal to want to purchase your childhood home?

The wife is fed up with her job and frankly I could go for moving back to my hometown instead of living in her's. The family homestead is currently occupied by my old man. My parents house got sold 23 years ago in what could best be described as a situationally caused depressed sale. It's Zillow estimated at half of what our current house is worth. Eventually we'll be moving into the homestead (6-10 years.)
Is it normal to want to move back there or not? Did I mention the average temp is 20° colder in winter with brutal lake effect snow/blizzards compared to where we live now? Have an autistic son entering high school in the fall and 2 years behind is my athletically talented son who I'd love to send to the private school I attended.
The community is stuck in the 90s except for the interstate site of big box stores turning a vibrant downtown into a ghost town. Reciprocity would make 3 states' land grant schools in-state tuition competitive with State's non-resident rates. Just trying to do the best thing for my family... the biggest decision I'll ever have to make since it will heavily influence my kids' futures.

If you don't mind me asking, is your son severely autistic as in needing government care regularly like trained after-school sitters?
I'm asking because my parents won't move from my small hometown because if they were to leave the state then come back years later, my brother (who has a condition similar to severe autism) would have to get on a very long waiting list to receive government assistance again in the state.
Something to think about depending on your son's condition and what state you're going to and coming from.

I have wanted to do the same. My parents went bankrupt when my dad's restaurant burned down. They lost everything to the bank. The only thing that's held me back from trying to buy the house is the house we have now is paid for.

I think it's normal to have fond memories of your childhood home, and to sometimes reminisce.
But if you feel a deep desire to purchase your childhood home in an attempt to relive your childhood experiences then it might be a sign that you're unable to find meaning or happiness in the direction your life is headed. I'm not saying that's where your head is, but it's certainly the case for many people who constantly dwell on the past.

Mine did. Nothing but a grass lot in the ghetto in NBR now.

California has a very good college program for autistic kids and it’s free for in state residents and residency is allowed after one year. Move to California.
