In the 80s, Japan's economy was growing fast and people were convinced that they were going to overtake the US. Then their economy stalled and China started to explode.

The Japanese DGAF. They're probably the most homogeneous country on the planet. They're absolute racists in their own right and they'll tell you that straight to your face.
They're a fascinating dichotomy. A culture steeped in tradition, honor and respect that loves to absolutely humiliate their own people on tv shows.
That said, I gotta respect the folks that gave us Bo-Taoshi.
