I know there have been chemicals approved for use that have turned out to be more dangerous than originally anticipated. DDT, PCBs, etc. But Roundup has been advertised as relatively harmless.

Are the enviromentalist overreacting or is Monsanto guilty of a 40 year fraud? I don't know.

Glyphosate is a small fry compared to some of the stuff being sprayed.

If I spent 10's of millions defending my chlamydia saying it's harmless in low doses, would you frick me?

Herbicides are a type of pesticide. Pesticide is overarching and includes insecticides, herbicides, etc.

Is there any evidence Roundup causes cancer? Just because a jury of laymen awarded a few baws millions (after listening to ambulance chasing lawyers) is not scientific proof. Lawyers are not scientists and even if they bring in experts, the experts are expected to answer in favor of one case or the other.

So where's the data? Anyone have any? Oh, that's right. The most important study on glyphosphate found NO LINK between it and cancer in humans. From Reuters:

quote:

One of the largest and most highly regarded studies to examine effects of pesticide use in real life is the Agricultural Health Study, a prospective investigation of about 89,000 agricultural workers, farmers and their families in Iowa and North Carolina. Since the early 1990s, it has gathered and analysed detailed information on the health of participants and their families, and their use of pesticides, including glyphosate.

AHS researchers have published numerous studies from their data. One paper looking at glyphosate and possible links with cancers was published in 2005. It concluded that “glyphosate exposure was not associated with cancer incidence overall.” Since then, more data has been collected, adding statistical power to subsequent AHS analyses.

In early 2013, Blair and other researchers began preparing new papers with updated AHS data on lymphoma and pesticides, including data on glyphosate. Reuters reviewed drafts dated February 2013 and March 2013, and asked Spiegelhalter and Tarone to examine them. They said the papers, while still in the editing process, were in relatively advanced manuscript form. The drafts contain notes in the margin and suggested changes signed "AEB," Blair's full initials.

After studying the draft papers, Tarone said the unpublished figures show "absolutely no evidence whatsoever" of an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma because of exposure to glyphosate.

Data on 89,000 people is massive. Almost every medical scientist would love to have that kind of large cohort in their field of choice.

Basically, these ambulance chasing lawyers just got away with highway robbery. A few baws who just happened to work in the ag industry get lymphoma and suddenly it is glyphosphate's fault. I know a few people who got cancer after working at McDonald's. Does working at McDonald's cause cancer? Can they sue for millions? This is scientific method 101 shite here (correlation and causation -- learn about it).

I suggest reading the entire Reuters investigative article: Reuters. It seems one of the scientists withheld exculpatory research papers from the court for unknown reasons. Things that make you go hmmm.

Herbicides are considered a pesticide cause they control unwanted plants. Unwanted plants are pests.

And now you get just a whiff of why juries are hammering MonSatan with punitive damages.

As a farmer, RoundUp is easily in the class of chemical that I don’t care if it gets on me. Worst part about RoundUp is it’s sticky.

Gramoxone is corrosive and was the most common method of suicide in China for a while.
Dicamba makes me cough if I catch a whiff of it.
Bifenthrin and Lambda-Cy have strong odors and wherever it splashes that place burns and goes numb for a few hours.
A dry insecticide called Transform can choke you up.
There used to be widely used herbicide called Prowl that you could smell it a mile away when it was being put out. They reformulated it and it doesn’t smell as bad. It’s still used a good bit in peanuts I think.

It also kills the hell out of wanted plants. For that reason I think herbicide is a much better term. If it selectively killed pests plants then pesticide would be better.

glyphosate is the A.I. in Roundup and many other weed killers of other brand names. It is a non selective herbicide.

With all of the other chemicals they used in their career, how could they possibly narrow it down to Roundup? How stupid was that jury?

I’m not sure how this helps your argument. Of course, a company is going to have a full PR onslaught to protect a multi-million dollar profit product.

And it’s not like the WHO has this great reputation of making non-political declarations. I would like to see the research the WHO panel used for making these declarations.

The juries that have spoken are seeing that evidence, AM. Again, the evidence is generating the verdicts...and punishment...being dealt.
