Is glyphosate an herbicide or a pesticide? Is there a difference?

I'm reading Whitewash, by Carey Gillam. She uses pesticide and herbicide interchangeably. It's driving me nuts.

It's a herbicide. They kill plants.

Spray roundup on a wasp nest and see what happens.

I nominate her to weed eat my 1/4 mile of fence line since she's against Roundup.

Pesticide is the broader term. Herbicides are pesticides that kill plants. Insecticides are the pesticides that kill insects. Fungicides are the pesticides that kill fungus. Ect

It is classified under pesticide. There are several pesticide classifications. Herbicide, insecticide, rodenticide, larvicide, fungicide to name a few. They are all considered pests.

A herbicide is a pesticide. Pesticide is all encompassing of all pests.

Herbicides refer to active ingredients labeled for plant pests.

Insecticides are pesticides but are labeled for insects.

Etc.

Okay, I'm willing to accept this. I'm only about 50 pages into the book, but having a hard time accepting her nomenclature. I thought pests - bugs/insects - were controlled by pesticides and weeds (or unwanted growth) by herbicides.

Apparently I'm pretty fricking dumb. The label on my jug of Roundup in the garage doesn't mention pesticide. It identifies as an herbicide.

Should identify it as a carcinogen.

And warn you to wear protective gear when using...

I worked at an industrial vegetation control firm for several years. We sprayed roadsides, railroads, chemical plants, power line ROWs, etc., I've sprayed a shite ton of Glyphosate.
Pesticide is the broad term, herbicide is the more specialized term like automobile is to Chevrolet.

That seems to be the primary theme of the book. I'm just trying to educate myself.

Look. You can read that book or read someone else's book about chemicals. If by the end of each you still think we're not fricked, well, live on.
