"The lost generation" mantra is because we basically raised ourselves. Between latch kids keys, high divorce rates, and the beginning of the computer age, we became a lot smarter than are parents about the time we were in high school.

There's a cool book called The Fourth Turning and it describes how generations are cyclical. It literally describes Gen X as the modern version of the 20's lost generation. And it describes millennials as the modern cycle of The Greatest Generation

Alpha Millennials, that's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one. You can't be an alpha if you play with fidget spinners, live with your parents, majored 18th century women's studies, or don't know your gender.

I'm not sure us Gen-X types ever had "hopes", we mostly raised ourselves, we mostly feel responsible for our own happiness (it doesn't come from our job or through the recognition of others), and we'll be the first generation to change our own damn diapers in the nursing home!

Millennials were the result of the dawn of the 24 hour news cycle in the 80's. Some kid would get abducted or fall in a well 2000 miles away, and it gets wall to wall coverage all over the country for a few weeks, scaring the parents (younger boomers, older Gen-X's) into helicopter parenting.

The problem only became worse when they became teenagers and all of a sudden cell phones and internet existed, increasing the number of tools available for parents to "keep tabs on" their kids well into their 20's.

Yes. Gen-X lived through the computer age transition and learned in college the old ways and entered the marketplace undergoing revolution. It created a lot of social anxiety and confusion for Gen-X.

Nah. I was born in '86. Parents didn't give a hoot what I was doing, so long as I made it to school and didn't get arrested.

I actually moved out of the house before I had my first cell phone.
