re: Is Dental Insurance More of a Mess than Health Insurance?

quote:That's where I'm at. Had not used any benefits in 2022, and I ended up needing 2 crowns in late December. Talked to their insurance person, and he suggested doing one in 2022 and another in 2023. Only problem was that when 2023 rolled around, my dental benefits were cut in half, and the $800 crown in December 2022 now cost $1,200 in January 2023.
So we started looking around for another dentist.
Frustrating because dentist is in network, and the insurance website says the crown should only cost me $200, even with the lower benefit.

Is this through a school board in Louisiana? I know they pay a certain amount of the health insurance premium but never heard of them supplementing dental insurance.

I don't know if this is true for everybody, but it's cheaper to just pay out of pocket for us. Dental and vision.

Who really thought tying health / dental / vision etc coverage to employment was a good idea?
That would be the Gubmint looking out for your well being!

My dentist recommended this less than 200 a year..
Mydentalplans.com/MyDentist.
it is a savings plan not insurance.

insurer would pay about $300 for a cleaning, the new one it's $120 if you are out of network. They can't eat this and they have decided they are going to start charging patients with that new plan a $150 co pay.
30 minutes of a hygienist making $35 an hour and they paid $300 for it.
Your poor dentist. I hope they can stay afloat during these troubling times.

2 “cleanings” a year from a dentist is not necessary. Brush twice a day, floss regularly, use an alcohol based mouthwash, and light/moderate sugar intake. Do that and you can go years between “professional” cleanings with no issues.

If your dentist is in network, it’s most likely worth it. If your dentist isn’t in network, and you don’t want to switch to one that is, it’s likely not worth it.

I’ve never really had a problem with my dental insurance, other than it doesn’t really pay for much. But it’s free to me through my employer so not much to complain about. Plenty of available in-network dentists to choose from.

My dental insurance was useless. I finally cancelled it.

I work for one of the worlds largest dental insurers (among other things) and can only tell you to get your own too..My spouse has one that was mentioned here already since they are a Teacher and as similar as they are, we essentially have to run things by the dentists/orthos to see whos to use

I cancelled our dental insurance in 2021 after I spent $6000 with insurance in 2020 on an implant and crown from my kids head cracking my tooth in half. Would’ve cost me almost the same without paying close to $900 a year in premiums plus a deductible.
